Epic Calder Race 2024-25

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Assuming both end up with a season that looks the same, most probably just hand the Calder to Celebrini because of it. That doesn't take away from Hutson's season, it's just a matter of age.

If both end up with a season that looks the same, you pick the defenseman over the forward 9 times out of 10(and the 10th time that forward is a great 2 way player while the defenseman is terrible defensively)

I think it's more impressive that an 18 year old able to play like Celebrini is with strong two-way impact compared to a 20 year old Hutson.

Ridiculous. Hutson is being asked to do much more and is thriving.

I'm sorry, but you can't with a straight face argue that Hutson is being asked to do "much more" than Celebrini.
He's playing important minutes every night as a Damn. Celebrini isnt being tasked with making the playoffs. Also the pressure in Montreal will ALWAYS out-do SJ. Sorry but that's not debatable

Celebrini is the 1C and the stats show he takes harder matchups with worse teammates. I've said time and time again that Hutson is extraordinary and should probably win the Calder but the Habs fans shitting on Celebrini and what he's doing, are doing it wrong.

And I don't think the award is described as "the best season for the biggest hockey market", so I don't think the pressure matters to the voters.

I don't think anyone is shitting on Celebrini. Kid is remarkable. I'm jelly of SJ and wish MTL won the lottery last year. Imagine Celebrini + Hutson on the same team in the show.

If that’s the case then you can basically rule out a defenseman or a goalie ever winning a Calder because they almost never enter the league at 18
Well, not every year an 18 year old will have a Calder worthy season, but agreed otherwise. Age should not be a factor. Not even if it means Sergei Makarov wins once in a while.

In NO WAY am I shitting on Celebrini, its just that Hutson has more stakes to what he's doing. As I've said before its close but the gap is clear. Hutson should win

You think voters are blindly going to account for age and not account for position? From the 2023 draft not one defenseman has played an nhl game yet.

Next year they will all be rookies the same way Hutson is a rookie this year.

Brock Faber was a d+2 rookie last season.

But I’m often left scratching my head when i see gambling odds on celebrini being the favorite still so the age/draft position angle may carry more weight than I expected

Where did I say it was a blind accounting of age? I said if the seasons are seen as equally impressive, they're just going to give it Celebrini because he's 18 and Huton is 20. Like, I thought Faber should've won it last year, and they gave it to Bedard.

Age has nothing to do with who wins the calder. A 26 year old rookie could beat out an 18 year old Celebrini for example.

Yeah, I'm aware of the Calder eligibility rules. If a 26 year old rookie puts up 120 points, he will probably win the Calder over Celebrini. But nobody is voting for the 26 year old if he's only outproducing the 18 year old by like 5 points.

If that’s the case then you can basically rule out a defenseman or a goalie ever winning a Calder because they almost never enter the league at 18
Yeah I mean if you look at the list of Calder winners, it's overwhelmingly forwards. But also most winners are not 18 because it's rare for an 18 year old to come in and dominate. I don't think Bedard should've won it last year, but Celebrini absolutely deserves it.

If both end up with a season that looks the same, you pick the defenseman over the forward 9 times out of 10(and the 10th time that forward is a great 2 way player while the defenseman is terrible defensively)
This isn't true because they picked Bedard over Faber last year, rather undeservedly.

Oh yeah, I'm sure the voters will see Hutson finish somewhere around top 5 in all time rookie dman scoring, with other names like Bourque and Lidstrom, who were the same age as Hutson, and go "well, age matters most. Let's give it to Celebrini who finished top 50 for rookie forwards, right next to Scott Gomez".
Didn't Gomez get like 70 pts in his rookie year? That may be a hard bar to get for any of this years' crop of kids...

True… we should not allow non Montreal/Toronto players to win awards

And celebrini is tasked with making the playoffs, he plays every game like his playoff life is on the line.

You said it…

Giving a guy a bonus for playing in Montreal lol
A bonus? If the sharks were on the playoffs race, or if celebrini was contributing to them being a contender then it would flip. Yes, Montreal has way more pressure regardless BUT it's the actual context of the season is what makes Hutson's season matter more. To me, it's close so we need to dig in to the context and we have a D leading the scoring race on a team pushing for the playoffs and being a big part of it. I don't see how Celebrini tops that

Why not dig into 2ndary assist or something.

Playoff race is a team thing Hutson isn’t carrying Montreal, Montreal has a solid core that’s a few years ahead of San Jose. And why would playoff race have anything to do with Calder.

At the end of the day all 3 are more than deserving of the Calder. I think we're splitting hairs here it's that close

My vote is Hutson tho. He has had the more impressive season IMO. Celebrini is getting tough minutes too but Hutson has had a bigger impact on his team success.

Wolf would be my #3
