Gotta wonder if Sergachev was caught...really hope not. Considering their season ended on Saturday, would he have had time to even join the team, take meldonium and then fail a drug test? Doubt it.

Wasn't Meldonium the same thing Sharapova tested positive for? What is this drug and why are so many Russian athletes taking it?

Yep.

Sharapova, 28, said she had been taking the drug mildronate, also known as meldonium, for 10 years to address a number of health issues, including low magnesium levels. Meldonium is a blood-flow-promoting drug banned because it helps oxygen uptake and endurance.

I feel bad for these kids. The coaches are idiots.

This. Adults compelling children to take performance enhancing drugs to win a youth tournament. Nice

We live in a world totally devoid of shame, its truly astonishing at times and depressing as well.

It appears that meldonium was extremely popular and ingrained in Eastern European athletics. Ever since the WADA ban, Russia and some of these other countries have been quite slow to get themselves off the stuff.

As a result we are seeing entire teams banned. Seems meldonium has been a good part of a balanced diet for many athletes for years.

Wonder if this is a one-time thing or if it's something that's been going on for a while in russian hockey.

Though I still think that putting meldonium on banned list by WADA is ridiculous (especially when Norwegian athletes are still allowed to take asthma medications) but it doesn't matter. It was known since August 2015 that it would be banned by WADA but our coaches and sports doctors are just so reckless and clueless it's unbelievable. Another issue with meldonium is nobody knows how long it's supposed to be cleared out of human's body. Apparently more than a few months, some say than it could be 1 year. That's a shame.

I also think this is more about recklessness and stupidity than cheating.

You are right that these guys may have been meldonium-free for some time, but not long enough to get it out of the system.

I would say that nearly all Russian athletes (whatever sport) have been using meldonium consistently for years. To them it would just be like another supplement.
