Like Matthews said last night only one team is happy at the end of the year. Winning game 6 on the road facing elimination was crazy growth. Did you hear what Marchand said after the game? Like it's f***ing hard as hell to win the cup...

You wanted to see that growth earlier. I don't think you realize the core is not young anymore, and the D is straight up old. So this is not an acceptable result.

Well then wouldn't that make the original poster he responded to correct then about the forwards being at fault since they aren't setting any kinds of picks which lead to their D getting hit all the time? Players don't need to be told to slow down forecheckers by skating in front of them to buy your d man an extra second or 2 because you're doing this since you were a teenager. If they need a system designed for how to do this then idk what to tell you. Ottawa and Florida played physical games so they are hitting anyone near the puck so it should be common sense to slow them up when they dump the puck in. Again though, I'm not gonna put blame on the forwards or the system when we could just as easily do the same but don't have the players who are willing to do it consistently.

the pick setting is a type of layering designed into the system...the leafs did it a ton under Babcock it has nothing to do with the players' willingness... lol tell me were they willing to set the picks in game 6 all of a sudden when they eliminated the panthers rim around play using the F2 to cut off the second panther in or was that an adjustment that Berube made? Paul Maurice changed up the gamer florida again in game 7 because the leafs had effectively made the panthers aggressiveness on hard rim arounds vanish in Game 6. it has nothing to do with willingness but I will say to run the type ofdump and chase hockeyBerube wants to play on offence we do not have the personnel on the wing or on D and that needs to be addressed otherwise the leafs will continue to be one and done every time they enter the offensive zone.

What Marchand and Maurice said about the Leafs last night(Tkachuk also had similar comments today on a podcast.)were purely trolling. They would love to see this Leafs core stay together for a few more years because these teams will likely to meet again in the playoffs in the near future.

Rielly is 30, Nylander just turned 29. Marner is 28 already. Matthews is gonna be 28 at the start of next season. It's not young anymore. They are in their primes. And the D is straight up old. They are not getting better, they are what they are. You can have any of them. Please. But together they don't work.

What about the flip side?

SJS from 06 to 19 never won despite keeping their core mostly in tact. They got a lot closer than us too?

Canucks from 07 to 13 never won and kept trying to push through. Their core made game 7 of SCF. They didnt rebuild/retool and kept the Sedins + most of their core too long

Other examples can be 90s Sabres, 06-now Preds etc

Some teams can't win with core players they try to build around.

These 5 core guys just take too much money and produce too little offense to compete with better managed teams with players who elevate their play in the playoffs

It's not young anymore. We did add pieces every single year. It's clear this is on the core players. They don't work together. You can have Marner. I don't care. I am not gonna miss him one iota.

This series was OVER when Woll took the net. He is an AHL goaltender and nothing more. It is not the same team playing in front of him. The team has absolutely no confidence playing in front of him.

He really took the shine off himself with his performances in game 5 and 7. The 4th goal last night cannot go under any circumstances. He’s still young but boy I definitely don’t look at him as the future #1 anymore. Before this year I had high hopes but he has more to prove now. He’s gotta show everyone consistency

Dude he has 2 years left on his deal after next season… if they lose in the first or second round again you seriously gotta consider blowing this thing up including trading Matthews. You need to get assets back for these guys. Nylander is probably the harder guy to move since he still has 6 years left on his deal after next year. But you gotta see what kind of haul you can get for your biggest asset if you fail AGAIN!

For the current summer though I’d immediately fire Shanahan, he’s gotta own this toxic culture, he created it. Second would be trading Rielly, I’d let Tavares walk if he’s not willing to take a massive pay cut, and there’s no chance you bring Marner back.

That was a brutal goal, so was the Gadjovich goal in game 3 which gave them the lead 4-3.
