Post-Game Talk: End of the Shanascam? | Leafs Blown Out at Home Again

How else do you explain going from a 5 game series two years ago to a 7 game series?

Do you say your team got worse or there's got better? He's not rushing to our defense, it's a self serving compliment to his own team because he can't say his team is now worse.
I don’t remember the Leafs getting blown out 6-1 twice at home two years ago. Who cares what Maurice says anyway.

I'm not a big Keefe or dubas but it is a system issue if your d are eating so many hits to break dump ins and work up the break out up the ice.

Part of it is not effectively utilizing picks like the senators and panthers did. Maybe the leafs are gun shy on this because of weird penalties called on them in the past but ive watched a ton of hockey from other teams and see these soft chips and interference slow down the oncoming attackers on the forecheck numerous times, florida was doing it unabated to the leafs. that's an adjustment that needs to be made.
Well then wouldn't that make the original poster he responded to correct then about the forwards being at fault since they aren't setting any kinds of picks which lead to their D getting hit all the time? Players don't need to be told to slow down forecheckers by skating in front of them to buy your d man an extra second or 2 because you're doing this since you were a teenager. If they need a system designed for how to do this then idk what to tell you. Ottawa and Florida played physical games so they are hitting anyone near the puck so it should be common sense to slow them up when they dump the puck in. Again though, I'm not gonna put blame on the forwards or the system when we could just as easily do the same but don't have the players who are willing to do it consistently.

I'm not advocating for a Rielly buyout given his contract structure but:

1) Cap is rising rapidly
2) Matthews' game is declining like his hairline
3) It is abundantly clear from his stint as Captain that Matthews should be on borrowed time here, at best
4) We don't have a window anymore, its a retool until we have the opportunity to rebuild, this core will never win anything as constructed
Rielly’s buyout is actually pretty team friendly. Advocate away.

He was 100% a troll. He deliberately posted the way he did with the explicit purpose to get a rise out of people.

He was Interactif/TWS, but with the opposite schtick.
Reading this makes total sense, I mean at one team the poster was a leaf fan was he not? than he just turned on them

Gary wants the league to grow, and quite frankly he's a done good job at it. But he wants the league to grow ONLY in the USA. No cup for a Canadian team since he became president. (well other than Montreal the year he became president)

Coincidence or ????
Or the fact that Canadian teams just ain’t that good.

Horrible move by mathews.its like he and marner both want out
I hope they do, think of the possibilities of a 16/34 trade would return, getting anything for Marner before he walks would be a best case scenario imo……

I do believe Evilhomer was a fan, but he didn't post here as a fan as much as he posted here as someone trying to get a rise out of people.

Maybe your unfamiliar with the Movement part of a NMC. Can't go to Marlies.

And trouba had a Modified No Trade. Not even a remote comparable
Didn’t know he couldn’t be sent to the Marlies, and I highly doubt the Ducks were a team Trouba was okay to be traded to…….

I agree with most of this, but the cap doesn’t go up until the cap goes up, doing accounting based on projected cap rise is a fools errand imo……..

Like Gretzky who could have signed with the Leafs instead of the Rangers but decided Canada wasn't home to him anymore.

I’m on the anti Gretzky train along with the rest of Canada, but this isn’t true.

There was a deal worked out and the leafs owner at the time (Stavro?) torpedoed it because he didn’t want to spend the money.

Yup. That's why it's a possibility that the Leafs will probably still try to sign Marner and let Tavares walk. Or sign Tavares for cheap, bridge Knies, and try to fill the rest of the roster with Cowan, Hirvonen, cheap rentals, etc.

If I'm Marner, I run for greener pastures. You're a family man, now - you don't need this noise for your family's sake lol.

But...it takes two to tango, so I'll indulge.

$12M AAV X 8 with 15 team NMC kicking in only in Year 3. Who says no lol. If you really love the hometown, then sign for $12M - otherwise, get $13.5M+ on the open market. And NMC only after 3 seasons of earning your stripes.
They already offered him $13.5M x 8 during the season and he turned it down.

Outside opinion here: Why has there been more people wanting to get rid of him, I thought the Toronto Maple Leafs defence was really good throughout the entire season.
He's a great person and has been a good Leaf in terms of leadership and professionalism. He really gets being a Leaf, his Dad is from Hamilton, so it's not surprising.

His play, however, has been erratic for a while. The idea going into this season was "we finally got him his partner" in Tanev. Then what happens? The "genius" coach doesn't play them together.

It's pretty much at the point where a change needs to happen, but it's one that hurts for me because, unlike the others, I can tell it hurts, rather than the "get me the f%4k outta here" feel I get from Mitch and Auston.

As for the defence as a whole, I disagree. It's the one issue that's not getting talked about enough. Slow and unproductive.

The Leafs defence throughout the season would be Tanev OEL and McCabe with smatterings of Benoit and Reilly, later in the season Carlo.

But that's the regular season, and in terms of our defence's improvement, none of it related to Reilly's play.

His utility is his 2nd pairing regular season offense/ 1st PP when he's on it...Which I think this season was largely driven by a 5 forward unit. But his defence is still team worst (iirc).

In the playoffs, Reilly has another gear, but this playoffs it was so very few and far between. In the past, sure, Reilly could affect things positively. But all signs point to a content man who is ok with slowing down.

His reads aren't fantastic either.

But he's a BC boy and we need picks...and maybe Mynio?

Cheers.

I can't view these attachments for some reason?

EDIT: Thanks for fixing it, those penalties aren't as bad as I expected.
They must have structured his contract that way intentionally. They save $21M on the cap over the next five years. To me they can find a better dman for $4.2M a year.

Given the Babcock debacle and then Dubas.

Yep.
Unpopular opinion:

Babs.... was a good coach. Asshol$...but he absolutely despises losing and was known for being incredibly prepared. He probably was the right coach for these pansies, but the pansies prevailed. Uncle Marleau had nothing bad to say about Babs. Kadri credited him with changing his career etc.

I like Berube but I dont think hes the greatest coach myself. Reminds me of Carlyle.
