Post-Game Talk: End of the Shanascam? | Leafs Blown Out at Home Again

I think Leafs scouting should pay huge money to scout European and yes even Russian leagues. We'd have more success with non Canadian players. For f***s sake, so many Canadian born players have Canadian teams on their no trade lists. f*** them.

For a team touting to play defense and not scoring goals in matthews/marner just FYI this is how you play defense

Florida came ready to play

Their pace and level of engagement is ideal.

Structurally we're not that far off, but our attention to detailed engagement is ass in comparison.

Even the 1 v1s you can see we're just outmanned in that, we're collectively less of a man in most instances, lol.

Damn.

And Babcock said precisely that very thing to Matthews when he had to visit him in Arizona in that one summer.
Will Chief have to make a pilgrimage to the desert to wash Austin’s feet like his predecessor?

Both can be true, and I think are. Fans are super passionate here, but this market will be much more hard on them compared to others.
Name another NHL team that has consistently crapped the bed in the most embarrassing ways over the last 20 years?
If the effort was there and they just fell short, then so be it. But to consistently get out worked, and look like they don’t care enough to make an effort, well they deserve all the diatribe they get.

Mirtle on JD bunkis this morning for what it's worth says theres going to be bigger changes that we arent expecting. whatever that means. Shanny is low hanging fruit and same with letting Marner walk. After that, not sure. But he says the MGM team is too bloaded and changes will come.
I so hope the club's civic engagement is reduced. Let contributions writ large be done discretely or with minimal fanfare, but we could use with a revamped nuts and bolts approach.

And bring back grooming and the uniform sartorial attire, lol.

First Memo: No More Mickey Mouse Shirts or Murses.

if by "hard" it means they can't go out and look like fools and not be applauded for it, then yes. we're way too hard. shame on me.

like i'm sorry. every time i hear this, I am like. seriously. look at the Yankees. and the Yankees win. Look at ANY football team in England. and somehow someway, the players get up every morning and do their damned job and perform well.

but in toronto. where ALL we want is for them to freaking not embarass themselves at this point, we're too hard on them? because all we want is for this team to do something that apparently every other team in the league except one + the one that got created this year can do? Which is not look embarassingly stupid in the playoffs and maybe win a cup? Shame on on us. how dare us.

I have full respect for Alter and Carlo for calling out this BS.
You would never hear this in New York, or Dallas [Cowboys] or big basketball markets.
These donkeys (BOTH teams, yes Florida too) are basically saying. How dare Toronto fans care about the team so much, and people are like yah how dare we.

not on my watch.

honestly i need to find that Shanahan clip of him calling that BS out saying it is too hard to play here and he doesn't want people on this team thinkng that way. because it's bull poo
TESTIFY!!!!

Imagine how it would have went over if all the post expansion teams that weren’t in major markets constantly complaining about the “unfairness” of not being in a big market……….
That's precisely what happened and the reason for profit sharing. Bettman rectified an inbalance in the system. Now another imbalance needs to be rectified. We give our profit to Florida so they're able to spend to the cap. No other North American league does this OR has a hard cap.

Not our Cheif's style. I'm thinking more like:

My take is the league saw a opportunity to fleece the players out of more money and took it………

yeah. we're the problem here.
(Now i don't know how they get 4m fans maybe based on twitter likes or whatever but yeah let's just put a big fat pin in it).

Who is using it as an excuse? I didn’t see any leafs mentioning it. Just panthers.

It’s one thing for it to be true, but another thing for the players to complain about it. All I am saying is that it is true. How the players feel about it is another thing altogether. But it is a fact, and leafs of 20 years ago admit the same. Last I checked these players signed here knowing what they were getting themselves into.

agree to disagree here

there are other north american sports (baseball, basketball, football) with really passionate fanbases but they don't complain and actually go out there and compete not lay an egg like they did in game 5 and game 7

same is true for other countries where they play soccer. think of Barcelona, ManU, Chelsea, etc..

hell cricket is essentially followed by 1 billion people in india as there is basically international competition (to my knowledge), and the cricket players get called out every freakin day but they still don't blow same is the case in Australia, and other big cricket markets. Time magazine back in the day had done an article to show big sports and expectations around the globe.

Same is true for aussie rules football

Leafs are the only team apparently on the planet where fan/media expectations is just too much no matter how much the athlete gets paid in signing bonuses, commercials, sponsorships, etc...

Its quite baffling!
