I agree with this. The better team won. Give Florida credit. Also, no whistles favoured their game big time. We need to make changes to improve and be able to win this style of game. They aren’t going anywhere.
Florida averaged 4 penalties a game during the regular season. The last 2 games combined they get 2. I love playoff hockey. It's more physical and intense of the regular season.... but to have game called differently from game to game is stupid.

The regular season is the regular season. But yes, they haven’t elevated their game enough in the playoffs to go deep. That said, they were playing the reigning champs and you have to recognize that they set the bar. You want a better performance in games 5 and 7 for sure, but the Panthers may very well repeat this year. Frankly, it looks like the Panthers just wore us down-their MO.

Disappointment aside, you have to recognize the step forward they did take. Florida has been playing this style for years now, the Leafs are one season in. Changes and improvement are needed, but blowing it up like some are suggesting seems like an overreaction. It’s still our best season since 2002. That goes much further back than the core 4 era.

What stood out for me, really most of the year, is that we need to improve our breakouts and sustain more pressure in the ozone.
Except they will have to beat the Panthers in the playoffs for the foreseeable future to get to the ECF and that’s a big hill to climb that’s not easy to fix and they’re not even close. When the Panthers came to play they dominated the Leafs. It was men against boys.

And to Berube’s correct assessment, it’s plainly psychological obstacles because we’ve seen those schizophrenic bouts with enough minor consistency to know that the ability is there.

People conflate desire with will. Will pushes desire’s limitations out the door with impunity and compels everything else to a singular focus.

The Leafs duplicitous focus unveils in every post-game scrum, where personal responsibility, or mutual admiration for their betters replaces justified anger with the situation and a statement of objective personal accountability.

Berube is what I would characterize as a human Xanax pill. His whole mission was to create a business as usual, Tuesday morning at the office kind of vibe to control the ups and downs of all situations to manage the team schizophrenia as you call it. Don't feel the pressure, don't look down from the tight rope, we believe in each other, screw the fans and media.

The double edged sword of keeping everything on ice and feeling okay is you can't turn up the emotional energy when you need it, can't channel negativity into uplift.

This team is batshit crazy.

Oh, he's a problem alright.

Check the run support in Game 3 if you don't mind. Add that up to Game 6 and you have a series win.

Let's just get a .910 goalie and then we'll talk.
They had numerous chances to win the series, I'd rather hold the 40M core accountable vs our back up goalie

Why didn't the core show up in game 5 and game 7 ? The two biggest games of their careers. Ok blame Woll for game 3, it was a complete team loss but let's assume Woll lost that one.

What is the excuse for the core not showing up for TWO games, on HOME ICE including another GAME 7 ?

Your reasoning is, if Woll played good in game 3 the series doesn't go 7 ?

He's our back up goalie and came in after basically sitting for a month.

Why didn't Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Nylander show up for the two biggest games of their career on home ice ?

So? There were quite a few goalies that did the same.
You're missing the point. The average GAA is misleading, if, for example, overall it is .900, but one game it is .85 and the next it is .95. The variance also matters, if there is someone else who has a .900 GAA and is close to that every game.

look at the ottawa series. on the pk all the senators did was collapse in front of the net which gave the leaf players time to set up. but florida pressures you and leaf players just can't make plays under pressure. in the d-zone the leafs just collapse and give florida's d-men time and space to make plays, hemming the leafs in time after time.
and when the leafs go down a couple of goals, they spend the rest of the game trying to make stretch passes to a leaf player when there's 2 or 3 panthers players already back there.
just terrible hockey by the leafs. they really needed that first goal that would have forced the panthers to open things up a bit.

I'm personally beating the crap out of the core and everyone who deserves it in their own threads.
But why not hold them responsible for game 5 and 7 ? If we're going blame Woll for the game 3 loss, fine. Why do these guys get a pass for not showing up for the two biggest games of their careers on HOME ICE ?

We don't win this series if Woll shows up for game 3

We win this series if this group showed up for either of game 5 or 7, that's why we lost. Not Woll, not game 3.

That is some committed, straight faced Core 4 PR.
It's the core 4 fault lol, its always your best players fault when you don't win, hands down, there's other blame to go around on the team other then them, but everyone is too blinded by hate against em to even speak about it..

I like the lack of calls in the playoffs, if it’s fairly ignored for both teams the fans are the winners imo……..

Not saying that, just not as emotional as you guys cause the core 4 has failed. There's other reasons as to why this team hasn't gotten it done.. Core 4 is one them, lack of secondary scoring is another one.

FLA has 17 different goal scorers this playoffs.. Tkchuck was held of the scoresheet, but it doesn't matter when other people pick up his slack.

Hockey is a team sport, if your only expectation is have 4 guys score every single goal of the playoffs, this is what you get.
We're constructed in a way that if is isn't the 4 guys leading the charged we're f***ed. We had contributions from Domi, Patches, and Knies that's huge for us. How much more secondary production does a group of $10MM players want?

Florida got a four straight first period PP, interest free loan from the NHL in Game 4 to get them back at 2-2 this series.

Yeah, they deserve credit for a close out, but the game management by the league was pretty explicit in trying to milk the series and Toronto for more gate receipts at a minimum, especially that cash cow Scotiabank Arena.

The longer the series went the more it favored Florida.

They got every penny of the money their agents demanded which placed them amongst the top of the highest paid players in the NHL and got the no move clauses all while having proven nothing and having won nothing.
There is no money left for secondary scoring.

Hey, you five want all the money? Then you shoulder all the responsibility. It's called a fair deal. Hey, Mitch and Matty and John and Morgan and Willy: your agents made up these rules, Leaf management and fans said okay, but now its time to honour your end of the bargain. WTF?

Definitely. It wasn’t even different from the regular season. We took 4 penalties in the first period of game 4 (or 5). I don’t get it.

Except they will have to beat the Panthers in the playoffs for the foreseeable future to get to the ECF and that’s a big hill to climb that’s not easy to fix and they’re not even close. When the Panthers came to play they dominated the Leafs. It was men against boys.

It wasn’t close in game 7. If it was that big a disparity in the series we get swept. Florida wore down our D over the series, took out our starting goalie, and the game got away from us yesterday when whistles went bye bye. Do we feel any better if the final score is 2-1? Doubt it. The margins are super thin in the playoffs. I mean, they basically dismantled TB and that was a series most thought TB would win.

So while I am disappointed, it is not nearly like years past. But I’m a glass half full guy and can see they went further than any leafs team in over 20 years. It’s the hardest trophy to win for a reason.

First real time I don’t feel sad or mad

I feel completely indifferent. Maybe because I knew they wouldn’t do it. This one doesn’t feel bad in the slightest.

This team has actually started killing my passion for hockey
You know your passion has been squelched when you start looking back on the tank years with a certain fondness because there was actual hope....that's what they killed in us...hope.

They dominated the Leafs in games 4, 5 and 7. The leafs scored four goals total in the last four games of the series. They’re not even close.

We drafted Kadri who has all those things.

But he’s the only one that we also traded out of here. Let that roll around in your brains for awhile
Kadri, Bunting, Marchment - all bled blue and were a little unhinged - like Max Domi. These guys play like Panthers, Lightning, and Bruins playoff agitators. And this forum screams to ship out guys like that - check comments on Domi as he was playing like Bennett and Tkachuk, even challenging Tkachuk to fight with that wrist slash.
