Post-Game Talk: End of the Shanascam? | Leafs Blown Out at Home Again

Businesses make money, 9 seasons of playoff hockey is good business. There's a chance without Marner we don't make the playoffs, the guys making the decisions won't like.to hear that.
Yup. That's why it's a possibility that the Leafs will probably still try to sign Marner and let Tavares walk. Or sign Tavares for cheap, bridge Knies, and try to fill the rest of the roster with Cowan, Hirvonen, cheap rentals, etc.

If I'm Marner, I run for greener pastures. You're a family man, now - you don't need this noise for your family's sake lol.

But...it takes two to tango, so I'll indulge.

$12M AAV X 8 with 15 team NMC kicking in only in Year 3. Who says no lol. If you really love the hometown, then sign for $12M - otherwise, get $13.5M+ on the open market. And NMC only after 3 seasons of earning your stripes.

We have the worst fans in all of sports.

I think the fans will get their wish of a clear out - we won't have to worry about play offs any time soon so you can all enjoy that.
If and when they decide to give this team the heart transplant it so desperately needs the playoffs will still be a seasonal accomplishment, because heart will get them there and heart will make them successful and heart will make sure if or when they fail it won’t be for a lack of effort.

Now doesn’t that sound like the team we all want to stand behind?

This is what Shanahan bet everything on.

As the guys on the Fan 590 said this morning, the Leafs kept serving spoiled milk. The sad thing is this passionate fan base kept slopping it up.

Yeah I was saying this for the last few games. These guys barely showed up this series and the Leafs still couldn’t beat this team
they weren't invisible by choice... lol Barkov and matthews legit smothered each other it was kind of f***ed to watch and not so fun being on the losing side of the series when no one else could do anything and we got eaten alive by eetu, Anton and brad

If ownership isn't serious about winning then we shouldn't be wasting our time as fans.

Mitch is a combination of the Tin man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz.

No heart, no brain, and no guts.

I live in Boston.

The fans there would NEVER, EVER, EVER tolerate the past 9 years like Toronto fans have.

It's not THAT the Leafs lose. It's HOW they lose, and HOW they behave, that would NEVER be tolerated in Boston.
100%, The Bruins have the track record to back that statement up.

Star players who doesn't put in the effort - Kessel gone.

Star who doesn't defend - Seguin gone

Superstar who doesn't care about winning - Thornton gone.

Understand the pitchforks coming out for Shanahan, but I do have some sympathy for him. He came in and burned it to the ground and started over with a build-from-the-ground-up approach that this franchise needed and had avoided for years in favour of quick fixes.

And he remained patient to stick with the vision of his belief in this core group.

His mistake was hitching his wagon to this particular core.
His mistake was hiring a flow chart nerd for the GM, everything from that act went downhill, and fast……….

I hate to remind people we aren’t on an Auston Matthews timetable to win a championship.

Yeah we could build a championship team and Matthews happens to be on the roster. But there isn’t going to be a causal relationship there where he’s in his prime and he powers a team to success. He is not capable.
Yes we are.
There is nothing in the drafting/prospect pipeline to blend into a future Leaf squad as Matthews ages into another tired Tavares.
And so if you choose not to build around the highest paid player in the league in order to win right now, as you are saying, then pray tell, what way forward is there?

Matthews isn't the player who was still on his upward curve and in his prime as late as the end of 2023-24. You can try to build around him but the way he's played all year we are probably just throwing good assets away in a panic there's nothing else.

Assets need to be cycled out and we need a retool.

Unless Mitch was playing hurt I really don't want him back. I was blaming his playoff wilt on Keefe's strategies but its 2 goals in 13 games and that doesn't earn a return IMO. If he comes back he won't take any kind of NM because this sackless management group doesn't do that. And he knows he didn't carry the mail this playoff but he won't settle for $12M either. The cap is going up, and mostly in Toronto right?
