Reminds me of people writing off the Penguins during the 2010-2015 stretch.

When you've got elite talent like the Avs do (and the Pens had), a bit of re-tooling and an impact addition (Kessel in the Pens' case) can do wonders.

You make it sound like the league did him wrong, when in fact he did his team wrong.
Given how driven MacKinnon is, I could see him not being good with a teammate who dropped out of two strait playoffs.

As long as snow falls on mountains, avalanches will always occur.

Now if we're talking about the Hockey team, as long as MacKinnon and Makar are on the roster they will be contenders.
Well that might be changing too. :sarcasm:

Do you count rock slides?

As long as MacKinnon, Makar and Rantanen are in their prime, they will be a Cup contender.

They'll make a few tweaks this summer and get right back at it.

I'd bet that MacKinnon has had a close friend or friends with similar issues and sees the big picture.

While Pittsburgh and Chicago bounced back, there are plenty of examples of slippery peaks as well. Pittsburgh itself has only won one round since 2017. Chicago never won another (non play-in) round after 2015. Ditto Washington 2018 and L.A. 2014. Detroit never made it past the 2nd round after 2009. Boston missed the playoffs in back to back seasons starting 2 years after their peak of 2 Finals appearances (1 Cup) in 3 seasons. We’re watching Tampa’s descent in real time.

They were all washed up, declining teams, though...

Avs have still have 3-4 good years ahead of them IMO.

Pretty much dead team.

Their MVP forward had 5 pts and was a -6.
Their MVP defenseman had 6 pts and -6 as well.

Good that they won in 2022 cause they’ll never sniff the cup again.
Yup. Makar struggled a lot defensively; more so than he normally does. IMO he was playing with a nick that limited his mobility. Still okay in a straight line, but maybe a growing tweak or something?

Hard to say it’s the end when you still have MacKinnon, Rantanen and Makar in their primes. Not the best series for them but it happens. Landy injury and Nichushkin issues really hurt though. They'll need to sort out their depth and goaltending but those are easier than finding the horses at the top of the lineup

Detroit had 3 more Top 10 finishes after their peak. Same with Washington. Pittsburgh had 2 more. Chicago had the 5th and 3rd most points in league respectively in the 2 seasons after their last big run. Boston won the President's Trophy after losing the Cup Finals in 2013. For the talk about the relatively young age of Colorado's core, Carter/Quick/Kopitar/Doughty only turned 30/29/27/25 before or during the season after their last round win.

Definitely the club needs to find better depth. Mac and Mak will be great for many years. But need a much better supporting cast. Not too sure if trading for guys like Middlestadt is the right direction? The cost to acquire and then to extend is too much when considering how they perform in tough playoff hockey.

Got their cup and otherwise can’t get out of the second round. In many ways, they’re the new Capitals. Which is a heck of a lot better than being the new Sharks, which is in turn a lot better than being the current Leafs.

That is the massive challenge the Avs face.
Up front: Mack, Rant, Lek, Wood, Colten 5 guys total $32.85 mill
Backend: Makar, Manson, Toews, Girard 4 guys total $25.75 mill (up to $58.6 mill)
Goalies: Georgiev, Annu - $4.24 mill

11 players for just under $63 million. Thus cap space of $24.5 million

Landy is at $7 mill but unknown if he can return. He will give it a try but will the Avs know on July 1 if they should or should not bank on him returning. And he may return and be only a fraction of what he was before. Nuke would be $6.125 mill but he's a complete unknown in terms of whether the Avs should even budget his cap hit on the roster this season.

That would be $13 mill right there that the Avs will want to know if they have or do not have to spend come July 1. Is Nuke sitting the entire season? Mittlestadt needs a new deal and that will be a few million.

Avs have dealt a lot of draft picks and prospects over the past couple of years and future as well. Have just 1 draft pick in the first 3 rounds in these next 2 drafts. 2022 only had a 6th and 7th round pick.

In the short term, internal help seems unlikely given the prospect pool. Have to make their mark via pro scouting.

Core guys are still signed for a while. If Landeskog comes back and isn't seriously ineffective they'll be fine. Replace Nichushkin, find a goalie. Cap will start to go up again so that should help. Not sure what their prospect pool looks like and if they have any guys ready to make the jump or not.

What a terrible take. “Not even close” yet lost in OT game 6. Nuke being “MIA” yet being top scorer before he got suspended for building snowmen.

I know likes aren’t a great metric on here, but OP is running a post:like ratio in the “Old Man Yells At Cloud” territory.

Their core guys are still in their prime. They’ll be a top team that doesn’t win cup though unless their gm is a wizard.
