GDT: End of season media availability - Today

agree
I didn’t hear what I needed to hear today. I know they were out of structure but no one answered why. No gave an answer as to why there were “passengers” or why Matthews said he felt Florida was more desperate. Nylander said he didn’t play well after game 3, no one asked him why.

same old nonsense

no accountability. this culture reeks. it has for years

Again, you have no idea whether, or how much, the ownership micromanages things.

You started by suggesting Shanahan leaving could leave to Treliving don't being "shackled" - your words.

That is pure speculation that Treliving wasn't already calling the shots.

That is, you have no idea whether the deal Nylander signed (as one example) was completely Treliving's call - the extension itself and the terms - or whether it was approved/demanded/whatever from higher up. Whether by Shanahan or above him.

So let me clarify.

Your claim of "ownership micromanaging" is a poor choice of words. The decision on whether to keep/trade a player making $10M+ (as much or more than any executive) is not micromanaging by any stretch.

In fact, any ownership group or individual that doesn't have direct input on that kind of commitment to a vitally important member of the organization would be an outlier. As pointed out in this forum repeatedly, players like Matthews & Marner have a huge financial impact on this team way above how many playoff games the team wins or losses.

So, to conclude, unless Treliving has one of the truly unique GM jobs in pro sports where he has near total autonomy, he has "shackles" now under Shanahan, and will continue to even if Shanahan is replaced by someone else, or even if he gets the big job himself. He's always going to be under the direction of the suits upstairs.

Who?

Bennett and Duchene are likely not available.

So who are they signing?

UFA market is terrible, so I'd be curious to see some ideas.
Then run it back again for the 10th time. Maybe next season Matthews won't be so unlikeable and actually carry this team. Marner will finally have some playoff success.

I still think you need to punt both of these dummies out and have a step back season. 34 and 16 are why this team sucks in the playoffs.

If I was put in the shoes of Brad, I would break everything just for the sake of breaking it up. I guarantee not a single fan would make any noise about it, these pathetic losers got nothing that’s exciting. I barely watched 15 games the whole season and 7 games in the whole playoffs.

There was nothing to be excited about, I was even pinning them down to go out losing to Sens. Oh well, whatever they do they have lost one fan since last season and I have even less of a reason to be watching them this season if the core is back. RIP Leafs.

Ryan O'Reilly already told us what the problem was with this team. The culture that has been created and fed is not one conducive to growth.

Didn't he vouch for all the stars? I know he vouched for Marner at least, so guess you think the Leafs should re-sign him?

“You could tell everything’s amplified,” O’Reilly said. “I don’t do it often, (but) it was a good thing when I played there that I didn’t turn on the TV much or turn on the radio, because there are (so many outlets) talking about it. … Everything’s covering it, talking about it. Here, it gets a little time on the TV, but it’s not everything. It is more than just a game there.”

“It’s definitely a treat and a privilege to play for an organization like that,” O’Reilly said. “If it ended up working out, I (would have been) happy there, but I just think this was the decision I wanted to do. My family thought it was better. We’ll see if it’s the right one. You never know, but so far, I’m enjoying it.”

Definitely doesn't sound like he enjoyed the media.

Sure there were other things, but he did say good things about Marner and apparently wanted him on Nashville.

So Matthews was injured in pre-season, struggled all year with it, and it impacted many different parts of his game.

.......what, the actual hell, was he doing at the Four Nations, then?!

If he doesn't decide on his own that he shouldn't go, you step in and make that decision for him - how reckless was that decision?
I have to believe they had all the information that the 2 weeks rest would not be sufficient, and playing wouldn't make it worse.

As dumb as MLSE is, hurting their assets is not something they are prone to do

It's not up to the oilers. He could very well pull the same shit marner did. He probably will in fact
Why would McDavid do that? His best friend is signed long term with the Oilers and they are in their 2nd straight conference final. Why leave a great situation to come to Toronto with an aging defense and a captain that doesn't care.

Why would Marner do that? His best friend is signed with Toronto and they won the division and took the cup champs to game 7. Why leave a great situation to go elsewhere

It happens. Getting courted by all the best teams in the leauge with everything they could possibly offer + private jets + backdoor handshakes is incredibly enticing.

McDavid will re-sign this summer. Silly to think he’s going to leave.

I don't think going into this season Marner had any intentions of leaving. There was a break down in contract talks with the Leafs and when they asked him to waive his no trade at the deadline the team decided to part ways.

I'm thinking it's a Darren Ferris play with a bit of light acting from Mitch. Note Sam Bennett is driving all the way to free agency too.
