GDT: End of season media availability - Today

I don't blame Marner for leaving. Screwed on his ELC, scapegoated on his next contract, robbed at gunpoint, and someone threatened to kill his newborn child after game 7. He's gone and Toronto doesn't deserve him.

I will definitely miss those spinning backhand passes to the opponent in the playoffs

Great smart and skilled player. Terrible communication with the media and a ghost when it matters. His scoring numbers in games 5-7 is pathetic

Is Treliving and/or Shanahan not talking today? If so, that's a complete unacceptable thing. Maybe they'll talk tomorrow or another date, but no reason you can't have your management leadership present infront of cameras.

That spinning pass went off the stick of Matthews. If he can hold it, no one complains. The scoring numbers for this entire team are pathetic. Anything you can say for Marner, you can say for the entire team.

Well at least he came away with something for his troubles

Career Earnings

$67,420,500

This is not taking into account all the ads he's been in...I'd say he made up for whatever Lou shortchanged him on that ELC so he can stop being a goddamn baby for once in his life.

Management usually speaks another 1-2 days after the players, I thought it was weird at first but it's not uncommon.

He did have a pregnant wife. Just something to consider. And I am not really trying to defend him

Not only that, the only way Carolina makes that trade is if Marner signs a long-term extension with them. If Rantanen didn't want to, why should Marner?

If Marner signs with the Canes, well, he will probably become the most hated athlete in Toronto sports history.

That said, good riddance, Mitch. Still have a bad taste in my mouth after that last contract BS. Enjoy wherever the hell you end up.

haha, You'd think Treliving would be there eventually, no? Like Shanahan skipping it, I get it. Like not going to the Company All Hands after you've been PIP'ed and are due to be terminated in a few days, but Brad has gotta show his face.

Ya, a pregnant wife that wouldn't be able to move with him. No chance I'd be going anywhere either.
I mean... Marner kinda brings it on himself with his attitude... Not signing early EVER... both contracts... how hes played it...

The first contract, if he signed early and even took 8x10 or 11... wouldnt have looked too bad on him...

he held out, talks came out that he was offered 8x12 8 x 11 or whatever it was at the draft and refused it.

Never takes accountability about his play.

Then this contract, doesn't resign, offered multiple contracts and reports of 13.5 x 8.. refuses it

Refuses a trade to Carolina that would net us Rantanen

then proceed to disappear in games 5-7 again

I feel bad for him because hes managed by idiot and has a terrible support system around him that tells him the wrong things to do every time.

They offered him contracts and he declined. He doesn’t deserve a penny more than Rantanen

Yep.

More than anything, though, and I haven't been able to watch the media scrum, does he seem mentally and emotionally committed to the Leafs?

Or is he thinking, "I wouldn't say no if they asked? " because I do wonder if he's had enough with all the extra stuff here.

Didn’t seem that dramatic. It was corporate and businesslike with a touch of regret.

I kind of feel bad for him. Another poster in a different thread astutely captured the evolution of Mitch Marner from this carefree kid during his ELC to a completely different person after he signed the big contract and had the weight of his shoulders on him. Bad way to go, especially if this wasn't of his own choosing but just counsel from others dictating how he should go about his business.

they are speaking on friday. (I think the day was)

Such a let down but I guess it gives them time to probably announce a few things before.

I don't really care if he's gone in a few weeks. I think that's part of the job until you don't have it.

honestly, i am just going to point out - Sundin - who is basically beloved - still got mega side-eyed and booed for not taking a trade to help the team and I get that it's complicated and there are a lot of factors that go into this - but this is how i see it -

if you know you are not going to come back why are you staying? like i get it. his wife is pregnant and whatever but pregnant women travel (see military/seminary/all these other types of wives who get pregnant and still move if their husband needs to be relocated). then you go "oh i care about the team/players/fans) like okay then accept you aren't wanted (FOR WHATEVER reason and go play where people will ike you).

THEN on top of this people are defending how he got 'screwed" on his contract. oh boohoo he didn't get a specific type of bonus. boohoo. he wanted to get majorly paid, didn't happen pouted/sat out, acted like a spoiled child then barely shows up in the playoffs, then it's "well leaf fans are jsut so mean and difficult to him."

when other better players worked with management to ensure that everyone could stay together and still get a good deal for themselves because they wanted to win as a team.

sorry
:leafs
before any name plate.

I mentioned the same thing yesterday in a conversation with @rumman, I believe.

With Mitch leaving, could AM34 just say I've had enough? He's American, no real ties here. Is there a chance he would prefer to go home to the US, maybe even to an Anaheim, LA or somewhere warm? Would he prefer to want out himself? Just his body language seems, I don't know, off? Maybe he is just sick of the spotlight?

I think it's a very real possibility.

They are speaking later this week - possibly tomorrow.

Pretty consistent for them though - the last few years, coaches/players have spoken on different days to management. Almost feels like a bit of a cop out tbh; let one group go first, test the waters on how comments are going down, and then re-assess and pivot from the PR standpoint before group 2 talks.

I love this quote. He just has the right mindset and approach to the game and life, even if it didn't work out for parts of this series.

He'll be back next season, and hopefully better.
The idea of his mindset is great. His delivery commensurate with that statement is puzzling and part of the PR sleight of hand that is growing tiresome.

I realize the team is instructed to frame things in a positive light and that in part we don't want statements about "Passengers".

But regret and shame are momentary drivers to self-improvement precisely because they truly embrace the pressure from within from those convictions to actually change behaviour.

Without it - and perhaps privately he and others are feeling that? - change won't come because the perspective remains the same.

I was genuinely surprised by Woll's breakdowns. Felt like a step back developmentally these playoffs.

Exactly. Part of it is probably also announcing a few management changes I assume and then talking about them. If nothing happens and they talk later, it's just crap.

It's a coaches job to support his players, so he wasn't throwing anybody under the bus, and it wouldn't be wise to do so. It's not his job to negotiate contracts, or trades.

Even the GM wouldn't publicly bash players individually, and I doubt that on Friday Treliving will do so. We won't have any idea of who might be traded, as he isn't going to put the team at a disadvantage in bargaining. He's likely to say we will be working on changes, or things like that... but I doubt he specifically names anyone leaving.

I know we are all hungry for change NOW... and many are emotional about it, but what counts is what happens between now and October... really until the end of the first week of July.... That we won't get all the answers is unfortunate, but it's what we should expect.

Matthews saying he's been injured all year was expected.
