END OF SEASON - Auston Matthews

  • On how he feels his first season as captain went - think there was a lot of growth there. Thought chief pushed him in different areas, and had plenty of support from teammates including John that have been around for a while. Was very eye opening, and wants to get better
  • On how Chief pushed him and if he can give an example - can't give examples (LOL), but thinks the communication every day and talking to him brought about new ideas and is a good communicator from staff to players, and makes everyone feel important.
  • On the pressure of the market - doesn't think it's ever really something that they talk about or focus on. It's the nature of playing in Toronto. Says he loves playing for Toronto, and playing for this fanbase and organization. The outside noise isn't really focused on or talked about in the locker room.
  • On the physical challenges of the season - says it was very tough. Doesn't need to get into specifics of stuff. Syas he got injured in training camp, wasn't feeling great, and then went to Germany to try and feel better and try to manage it. Says there were stretches where he felt good, and other stretches where he didn't feel very good. Definitely a tough year, but is confident with time off and going through process and that he will be back 100% next season.
  • Will he need surgery? No
  • On whether he can share what happened? Is going to keep it to himself.
  • Did his injuries impact his ability to shoot the puck? Says it impacted a lot of different things.
  • On how important marner is for this team and how difficult it would be to lose him - says it's tough. says he's a brother, teammate, friend, says he is extremely close with him, and has been a huge part of their team for a while. Says unfortunately that's the nature of the business - people come and go, and he has the right to make his own decision.
  • On playing with John Tavares - says it's been amazing. Says all the support, especially last summer with the captaincy, and mentorship he brings every day, is someone he leans on a lot for a lot of situations. Can't say enough good things about him.
  • On even though he has the right to keep his injuries private, what about all the speculation that this silence could lead to - says it's his right to keep it to himself.
  • On if concerns other teams may target his injuries, being a factor in keeping it private - says yeah, definitely, it's a factor (this feeds into previous rumors that Matthews was very upset tthat teams were targeting his hand early in his careeer once he injured it the first time and the team went public with it).
  • On whether he re-aggravated any injury that he had in the past, during the playoffs - says there were stretches where he felt really good.
  • On the challenges of trying to lead while battling injuries - doesn't look at it as a challenge. Feels very fortunate every day to wake up and do what he loves, and to have the opportunity to compete in the NHL with this group of guys and inthe city of Toronto. Doesn't view it like a challenge, but as being present every day.
  • On teh differences this season felt - says this one stings the most because you make it down to 8 games, and a game away from final the final 4, and the eastern conference, says it sucks. Sasy the idea you are that close to being that close, stings.

Now that it's come out that Marner declined multiple contract extension offers from Treliving and had no intention of re-signing here, it's difficult to not resent him as a fan for refusing to waive his no trade clause at the trade deadline. We could have had Rantanen signed to an 8 year extension for a 12 million AAV but Marner was too selfish to let that happen and now we'll have nothing to show for it after he walks.
TBH I don't hate on him for not waving. I'd take Rantanen over him in a heartbeat though, don't get me wrong.

It's would be really hard as a husband and person to agree to that trade and move your 7 month pregnant wife to a new country. To me it makes so much sense to veto that trade, you got the trade protection for this reason.

well when Marner refused 8x13.5... yeah, you try and move him and not the guys you plays hard and says he isn't going anywhere in Knies
yeah, cap wise it wouldn't work anyway to keep Rantanen and Marner, so it quickly becomes a one-year rental and then Rantanen for Marner + Knies, which is a horrible trade in my opinion. Glad Treliving said no as he probably saw it the same way as well

Suprirsed more people are fine with Nylander saying they made strides this year by losing in the 2nd, I guess it just depends what player says what.

Normally that is loser talk.

This is on Dubas for giving these no move contracts. The player cannot be blamed for exercising his contractual right

Matthews was re-signed, Nylander was re-signed, Marner didn't have a NMC when Tre got here... but ya, makes sense.

Wait until you find out who has trade protection now, you are going to flip.

We shall see I guess. If his decline is permanent we will be second guessing the treatment and management of timelines.
Yep.

More than anything, though, and I haven't been able to watch the media scrum, does he seem mentally and emotionally committed to the Leafs?

Or is he thinking, "I wouldn't say no if they asked? " because I do wonder if he's had enough with all the extra stuff here.

There’s alot of Finnish players left in the playoffs. Are we missing something here with that element ?

Dallas has 5 of them
It's an awesome country. I spent summers (and winters) there and love the country, landscape, and people. It's a perfect land for outdoorsy introverts lol. Very high tech, amazing nature, great infrastructure, extremely educated population, and fun but civil drinking culture lol. They love their hockey too - you can find indoor rinks in summer that people play or skate in throughout the country.

Yeah, but he was still not going to sign with Carolina, which was likely part of the deal because that agent was and is only interested in taking him to Canada Day.

Matthews talking like Marner is already gone - insightful.

Matthews injury is back. The ups and downs comment. The fact that it affected a bunch of aspects of his game. Most importantly….no surgery.
Once your back gets injured that's one of those things that rarely ever gets back to 100%. He'll deal with it for the rest of his career and pretty much follow the trajectory of insane season followed by average season from here on out.

He's also missed time in the past for a back injury - which is pretty scary for the reasons you suggested; once you start flirting with back problems, it can be impossible to truly stay on top of it as a normal person, let alone a pro athlete playing a sport that relies so much on that sort of stuff.

Yup this is on shanahan from 3 years ago.

It all came to a head now.

Not to mention it’ll be open season on cross checks from here on out too. Look at what Marchand “legally” landed on Tanev.
