GDT: End of season media availability - Today

They're bringing this back aren't they. The excuses are already coming in line with no mention of how this core continues to learn year after year with no mention of WHY you shit the bed in big games. Why are you scoring 3 or 4 goals in total in every game 5-7?

The company line is going to be "we lost our structure" and that's why they lost. Well yeah, you did, but WHY??? Is it because your core 4 isn't wired to compete hard in game 7's? Is it because players become brain dead in key moments e.g. Rielly stupidly pinching up in the neutral zone to create a 2 on 1 going the other way? You know the first goal is crucial. Why is Rielly poking his stick instead of using his body in his zone showing he didn't want to compete the way you have to?

Nobody talks about this because in the end there isn't accountability. It starts from the top. At the very least Shanahan has to go.

100%. I think you give him a fair deal. In a few years if things don't improve and a rebuild is inevitable, the Leafs could get a pretty good return for a well respected vet.

A team always needs centres and the more he talks he clearly very much wants to stay

He's disappointed but he's also been a good soldier, and isn't in a leadership position anymore.

Emotions for the last few days aside. If they could get him at like 5-6 mil, I'd be okay with it. Because the free agency options aren't any better which means they'd have to go the trade route and see what a package of Woll + Florida's 2nd round pick + Cowan/Danford gets you. Which doesn't seem too appealing

Tavares is like a day old donut. Past its best before date. Stale and probably not a good idea but in the end no serious harm in keeping him.

Curious: would anyone want JT back at the right price? Like $5 million right price? Or has that ship sailed?
I would take him on $5M X 3 and move him to LW by Year 2 if not next season. He can still be effective on the wing with deflections and down low while hiding deficiencies with his speed. Useful in situational faceoffs as well.

Despite it being an absolute slide show of an experience so far, what little we could see of Marner's avail makes it crystal clear that it's he who is done with the Leafs.

he's gone. as I said all year, he decided mentally that he was done with this team / town / market a while ago.

I would definitely take Tavares back on a team friendly deal. He still has some gas left in the tank.

The cap space that would have been required to keep Marner on the other hand could be better utilized elsewhere. We can realistically sign 2 impact forwards with a stronger playoff pedigree for 13-14 million dollars.
