GDT: End of season media availability - Pelley speaking Friday at 1PM EST

I'm not building my team based on possibilities. The big names are likely to re-sign with their current teams. Matthews and Nylander aren't getting younger. Spend the money on Bennet and Marchand.
Florida can comfortably offer Bennett $8 million, which—after taxes—would be equivalent to more than $9 million in Toronto. That means the Leafs would need to offer well over $9 million just to be competitive. Even then, Bennett might prefer to stay in Florida, where he’s winning and enjoying a much easier lifestyle. Realistically, the chances of landing him are extremely slim

Love how last year Pelley said he won’t participate in team new conferences: bam! Back again.
Last year:

I don’t believe anything this team says.

Last year Bell and Rogers and Tannenbaum ran the team.
this year, Bell is out, Tannenbaum is going to be out, and Ed Rogers is cutting things everywhere. and the GM is not in the city at all and they basically fired the President of Hockey Ops.

so what he said last year - vs what the reality is now is completely different.

you can not believe them - but also perspective and nuance is also important.

I have too but it's highly unlikely that Matthews is moved. Their best bet is build around him.
That's fine. Shake up the rest. But you gotta at least have enough cap space for McDavid. Could you imagine if he would want to come and we dont have enough to sign him cuz Brad signed a bunch of guys? He'd get fired. I'd be shocked if they werent preparing for next off-season.

That's fair. I don't think McDavid is coming and I don't see a point taking a step back for a season in hopes McDavid or Kaprizov become free agents

that was just Dubas spewing non sense trying to look smart while constantly adjusting his glasses for added affect

he thought he'd look like a genius by ripping off how baseball develops prospects , but every sport is different and your best prospects in hockey don't go to the ECHL , they either make the big team or spend some time in the AHL , outside of goalies

I'm surprised he didn't make the prospects become Chinese rice farmers. It could teach them patience like when he said that Keefe would be a HHOF coach when Matthews is 40 years old so why try and hire Maurice, DeBoer, Trotz, Cassidy or anyone good?

Which is the 2nd best scenario for the Leafs. Once there is no chance of signing him they can unload Matthews and Nylander
I like your process of just completely disbanding the Core 5.

I would trade AM to Rangers for JT Miller(if he waives) plus 1sts.
Then Willie to Preds for Marchessault and 1sts.
Trade Reilly for 1st and picks
Trade Kampf and Calle for picks and prospects

Then sign Bennett, Ekblad, Marchand, Brown, Tanev and McBain

Wow
Best part is there is no Marner

If McDavid was a free agent and wanted to come the leafs would trade whatever they needed to make cap space. Not a concern at all.

Once they’re out of the McDavid scenario, you go complete rebuild.

All these guys got NMC. And if you go hunting you'd have to give them out like candy to a marchant or a bennett. The leafs gotta be smart with the deals this off-season and find a way to get better but also keep flexibility for next off-season

Marner would be crazy to resign with the Leafs. The fans booed him off the ice in the last game. He'll be abused by the fan base if he comes back. Marner should go for his own wellbeing. The Leafs HAVE to move on from 2 if not 3 of the core 4. I wish - for different reasons - they would move off all four.

Tavares: Hard worker, skilled, and a 30 goal scorer, but too slow and ineffective in the playoffs.
Marner: Ineffective in the playoffs, too soft to play that kind of game. Great skill but neutralized in playoffs.
Matthews: Call me crazy but I wouldn't mind it if the Leafs trade him. No emotion, no jam, no physicality, no intensity, injury prone, and can't play playoff hockey. Sure he scores in the regular season, but who cares, he can't in the playoffs. Trade him for a great return.
Nylander: Great talent but lazy. Won't hit, doesn't back check and he doesn't seem to care. To respond to the question "What happened in game seven?" by saying "Just a Sh*tty game" with no anger, passion, or frustration was tone deaf, given the fan reaction. It gave the impression that he really didn't care despite it being 9 years of the same. Maybe he doesn't. Maybe he just likes to play hockey, make money and live a good life. Maybe he's so laid back that he's okay with whatever happens. If so, that's his right, but if so, he needs to move on.

They all have the same problem: because of how they play they're all neutralized in the playoffs. They might succeed on teams with better balance. But the Leafs can't win with all four of them together.

Having said that, I realize that they can't or won't move on from all four. But unless they move on from at least 2, I won't bother following them next year. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me 9 times, shame on me for being a complete idiot for thinking running it back will be different next year.
