Marner would be crazy to resign with the Leafs. The fans booed him off the ice in the last game. He'll be abused by the fan base if he comes back. Marner should go for his own wellbeing. The Leafs HAVE to move on from 2 if not 3 of the core 4. I wish - for different reasons - they would move off all four.
Tavares: Hard worker, skilled, and a 30 goal scorer, but too slow and ineffective in the playoffs.
Marner: Ineffective in the playoffs, too soft to play that kind of game. Great skill but neutralized in playoffs.
Matthews: Call me crazy but I wouldn't mind it if the Leafs trade him. No emotion, no jam, no physicality, no intensity, injury prone, and can't play playoff hockey. Sure he scores in the regular season, but who cares, he can't in the playoffs. Trade him for a great return.
Nylander: Great talent but lazy. Won't hit, doesn't back check and he doesn't seem to care. To respond to the question "What happened in game seven?" by saying "Just a Sh*tty game" with no anger, passion, or frustration was tone deaf, given the fan reaction. It gave the impression that he really didn't care despite it being 9 years of the same. Maybe he doesn't. Maybe he just likes to play hockey, make money and live a good life. Maybe he's so laid back that he's okay with whatever happens. If so, that's his right, but if so, he needs to move on.
They all have the same problem: because of how they play they're all neutralized in the playoffs. They might succeed on teams with better balance. But the Leafs can't win with all four of them together.
Having said that, I realize that they can't or won't move on from all four. But unless they move on from at least 2, I won't bother following them next year. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me 9 times, shame on me for being a complete idiot for thinking running it back will be different next year.
