I think Boeser has a chance to carve out a Toffolli career. He will be overpaid though. I also think a team needs to make sure they have a player that can feed Boeser to maximize his production. I feel Boeser has a couple of 30-40 goal season ahead of him but his skating and pace are getting worse imo.

toffoli is a great comp imo, i just think 8m for a player that relies on other is a dud contract in the making

Some team is going to give this guy a 7 year deal for 7-8m and probably regret more than half of it. He’s Mike Hoffman 2.0 with some mileage on him.

Some of the best deals are the ones you never make but letting him walk for nothing is pretty dumb.

If Marner walks in the off-season this is a worthy Plan B for Toronto. Definitely a large delta between the two players, but him and Matthews seem to get along and if the Leafs can for once sign someone at a team friendly price the extra cap space would go a long way.

First off, I don't believe that's the best they could have gotten for him, second, that literally makes no sense you would rather get nothing over a 2nd round pick.

While I understand the sentiment of not taking low ball offers, the market sets the market value, not the selling GM.

Boeser being worth a 2nd doesn't mean another player will be worth less all of a sudden.

Its more a question of if keeping Boeser as an own rental and to maybe negotiate a new deal was worth more than what is offered, or about setting the precedent of setting a price that you wont accept less than.

I don't expect the Flames to spend much on forwards, adding a top 4 defenseman will allow the team to play looser though, which will increase scoring back to middle of the pack I suspect

It depends on the situation.

Montreal for example decided not to sell Savard, Armia or Dvorak at the deadline (and re-signed Evans). They were ok with that regardless of if they make the playoffs or not (and Montreal's odds were significantly worse then than now). The consideration beyond the offers they received was supporting the locker room and the fact they already had 12 picks in the upcoming draft.

Montreal will likely lose their rentals for nothing and no one is losing sleep over it.

I don't think the Boeser/Vancouver situation is the same though.

He's a legit top-six winger. He's had a down year this year, but the team has had its fair share of issues, including the center position. He'd look good on any number of teams, including New Jersey. The eventual contract won't age well, but many don't. It's a NHL trademark.
