That's an option, but I'm sure there are others out there. I mean, nobody really saw the Habs trading Barron for Carrier.
No one expected our right side to get as exposed as it did to start the year even with Savard.
The writing was on the wall when with Savard out our RD got walked like Pee Wees.

He wasn’t a throw in. They wanted him specifically. Habs scouts liked him in the 2020 draft and had pick #47 and #48, Heineman went to florida at 43.
I'm aware of the picks the Habs had that year, IMO when you want a player that bad especially with back to back picks right after, you move up and select the player you really want, you don't let that get away for a 5th or 6th round pick along with either of 47-48 IMO...

Never said they wanted him ‘’that bad’’. They were interested. When he was an option in the Toffoli trade, they wanted him because they liked him previously.

I didn't think he wasn't going to turn into anything when we acquired him. Pleasantly surprised. Curious what he could do with top 6 ice time

And what happens when every team likes the guy they have at the top of their board too much to risk them being gone for a simple 5th round pick?

Heineman is a good cautionary tales on a few things:
- Injuries can seriously delay/alter a player's development
- A player needs time to adjust to NHL and find their identity as a player (his previous call ups were nothing to write home about)
- it's important to leave roster spots for young players (for all the talk during the summer to sign a 4th line player)
- it's too early to write off a player at 22/23 years old, didn't check but I bet Heineman was outside top 12 and a big faller for prospect rankings; dropped 9 spots. From 7 to 16.
- seasons with no progress on stats front doesn't mean it's a wasted year in development (see Lehk as a prospect)

not to go too off-topic, but a few of these reasons are why i'm more inclined to believe a guy like Dach will put it together, or at least deserves some slack on his leash while he tries to figure it out, whereas i was ok with giving up on Barron.

Heineman showed flashes of putting everything together (in his first training camp, in the AHL), which Dach also did with Suzuki and Caufield, and before getting injured last season. a guy like Barron showed flashes of his skill but never an ability to play a complete game.
