Prospect Info: Elias Salomonsson, 2022 NHL Draft, #55 Overall

I truly think Salomonsson will quickly become a top 3 defender on the Jets within 2-3 years. I know that's pretty ambitious, but I had the same belief about Samberg being our best shutdown defender when he was patrolling the d on the Moose. Some players you can simply tell they have a game that translates to the NHL. Their reads are spot on, and their skating ability allows them to challenge and compete all over the ice at a different level than most players when you combine that with hockey IQ. Salomonsson likely won't block shots as well as Samberg, but he has better offensive reads and plays a physical style (similar to Pionk) with elite skating.

Morrissey, Samberg and Salomonsson are a good foundation for competitive d corps with young pieces similar to Dallas. If Pionk is not resigned, the Jets would do well to get a strong, defensive-minded veteran LH dman for the 3rd pairing.

Morrissey / DeMelo
Samberg / Schenn
XXXX / Salomonsson
Stanley / Miller

After that, if you can resign Schenn for one more year, to help transition Salomonsson into a top 4 role that could work nicely.

Schenn is a 3RHD.

lol last off-season you were adamant on salomonsson making and playing a huge part on the team this past year.

the depth chart got even more crowded at RD, and i put higher signing %-chance than not that the Jets want to re-sign Pionk.

You don't think the Jets want to extend Pionk?

Don’t disagree that Schenn is more suited as a 3RHD, but I would have him in the lineup before Miller AINEC.

It's only crowded for one more season. Seems to indicate the organization would like to give him another development year. Coming off shoulder injury not a bad idea to let him get stronger before joining the professional ranks.

I wonder about the Jets bringing over Frej next year to have the two draft picks overlap and develop some chemistry. Pretty decent chance Lundmark isn't re-signed. Coghlan I think comes back, as insurance. Left side defense on the Moose definitely needs some improvement.

Jets definitely need Schenn for the PK. It's nice to have a guy who can back up De Melo. We'll see if less PK time makes Pionk more effective.

I wonder if you'd see Miller and Schenn together in the playoffs where you don't hesitate to put out Josh on the 2nd PK. Right now that's Stanley's spot in the lineup. But those two can make impact hits. And are the more reliable vets.

Come playoff time I wouldn't be surprised if Morrissey and Samberg play about 48-50 minutes of a game.

His shoulder injury earlier this year has delayed an NHL arrival to end of season if at all this year. Jets are taking a conservative approach to his development which is likely smart.

Wiebe is on record recently saying Jets want Salomonsson on the roster next year. I’m sure they would like to get him into the lineup too before Schenn’s and Miller’s contracts expire at the end of next year.

I also think they have a number they would resign Pionk at, and there’s a higher % chance that Pionk’s team is looking for more, and that’s higher than the Jets are willing to go.

may have worded that awkwardly. id give a higher-% chance at the Jets trying to sign Pionk than not. meaning, i expect him to be here. Salomonssen didn't make the team last year, now you add Schenn for another year, and likely re-signing Pionk as mentioned. Where does Salomonnseen get consistent NHL minutes barring injury?

i think you guys seriously put way to much stock on off-the-hip comments especially way before the actual start of the next season.

last year, bunch on this forum was convinced that salo (& lambert) would be playing in big nhl minutes b/c chevy said so. or, the idea of arniel giving far more opportunities to young players ..........none of that happened other than sporadic/minimal injury fill-in.

now b/c ken wiebe says it's happening?

if Pionk does go it may change things. however, kind of like ehlers, i don't think the Jets are letting either of the 2 players with high market value go for nothing. meaning, if they had a semblance they had no chance of extending them they would have been traded in the off-season but for sure Pionk may reject the Jets offers. alternatively, maybe the Jets try to use that excess unused cap-space to get another vet 2RD in.
