Player Discussion Elias Pettersson | The Forward. Not the defensemen.

If pettersson returns to scoring at a ppg pace while providing selke level defense, is he worth his contract? Or does it need to be 90+ ?

Dude has shown up to 4 of the last 5 seasons, barely able to skate. Team has given him shit, and his response is a 50 point season.

Allvin would regain all my trust if he could get rid of this burdensome player and contract and get valuable assets back.

PPG at 11.6M? Possibly but he would have to be a play driver. He would need to excel when the team was down a goal.

He would have to be the guy up front. Game breaker when required.

I don’t believe he is capable of that

I would've been okay with the Necas+ package, but I'd much prefer holding onto him and seeing if he's able to recover his game. As others have said, hard to see us being competitive at all in the Hughes' window if Pettersson doesn't get back to being a 80-90 point two-way center.

At the time of signing his extension, Pettersson was not providing Selke level two-way play, let’s make that clear.

But this chart, at his extension does indicate a high end offensive talent. At this point, if he has to sacrifice defensively to get his offensive game going, you do it, if nothing else but to build his value up again.

I’m also not sure how his health will hold up over time. If we’re trading Miller, might as well rebuild at that point. I can’t see Pete being able to match up against the likes of Mackinnon/McDavid/Drai in the playoffs with his small frame, falling and flailing all over the ice.

Simply put, any trade will set the team back. To fill the spot of what Miller (or Petey) should have offered will take time (and luck). So whatever happens, factor that into the window to compete. This situation probably will set this team back until at least 2026-27. Good for 1 last hurrah while Captain Hughes is still here?

Pettersson is 57th in TOI/GP for forwards.

Tonight he got 15:11 while playing with Linus Karlsson and Nils Hoglander

Meanwhile, Pius Suter got 18:02 of icetime.

At what point do we question why Tocchet is using him like a 3rd liner? Go compare the usages of every 10mill+ forward in the league with Pettersson, it's not even close.

You earn ice time

So let me get this straight. Over the last few years it’s been:

His line mates. Not the player.

His wrist. Not the player.

His knee. Not the player.

People on his social media. Not the player.

The medical staff. Not the player.

His feud w JT. Not the player.

His ice time. Not the player.

The coach. Not the player.

This player simply has to many issues for him to be successful. It genuinely never ends with him. Theirs always an external factor that prevents him from being a consistent driver on the team.

It’s never him.

Tocchet might not have the best judgement with how much he trots Deharnais out despite evidence not to.

Yeah with dynamos like Juulsen and Freidman as potential options it's really puzzling.

You're blaming the wrong person for why Desharnais has been in the lineup so often.

Coach sets the lineup. At the end of the day everyone from the top down want to win, and it's clear as day, VD is not pulling on that rope.

I think those are excuses given by his defenders, but I think his main issue is him being too hard on himself, and he probably recognizes it too. It's frustrating. I hope he can grow beyond it.

You silly thing.

Many if the reasons you listed are about the players.

Why are you so actively campaigning against Pettersson? Why not just admit that you are incapable of making a objective assessment of this player and raining your emitonal posting back?

He was played tonight with a minor leaguer (Karlsson) and a struggling player who has been healthy scratched and mostly can't be trusted defensively.

He also played several shifts, with those wingers, with some combination of Desharnais (who f***ing suuuuuucks), D-Petey (who impressed me, but it's his first NHL game), or Forbort.

But "hurr durr he makes 11.6 million, why isn't he dangling the whole team like a Disney movie".

Being clear, his linemates and useage aren't the only reasons he's struggled, but his injury, his usage, and the way he's being used to hide bad D who can't move the puck are all conspiring to rob him of his confidence and he's been far less dynamic than we need him to be.

But if we trade him after doing ALL of those f***ing stupid things to depreciate his value (I don't want to trade him under any circumstances), then this franchise is truly never going to win anything.

Getting a 2nd pairing D and an extremely flawed 2nd line winger/sometimes center from a terrible team is a horrendous move.
Reminder, this isn't trading on potential. Byram and Cozens are two years younger than Petey. If they aren't what they are yet, then why do we assume that he is?

I'd also like to remind people that at Petey's age Miller was coming off of a 47 points in 75 games season. Somehow he improved, do you suppose that the 26 year old two way superstar with a 100 point season an 89 point season, and a career of a point per game might get a similar leniency to do so?
