Verhaeghe-Barkov-Reinhart is far and away their best line. Reinhart is better than Tkachuk and Barkov is way better than Bennett. Verhaeghe is also better than Rodrigues.

There's a reason why Tocchet pairs Miller with Hughes and it's because he wants to shut down the opponent's best line while also being a threat to score on them.

In theory, Pettersson should be able to fill that role equally as well, but Tocchet seems to trust Miller to do that job better, even after Pettersson played quite well in Miller's absence.

I'm assuming most ppl would choose Tkachuk over Reinhart if given the choice but I could be wrong.

The point isn't EP vs Miller. It's the gigantic gulf b/n QH and the rest of the D that's the concern. I feel the stats posted above by @PuckMunchkin clearly shows his impact, and how getting to play with him vs the bottom 4 is a game changer.

On the one hand I get that playing with anyone not named Hughes is going to be like playing shorthanded most of the time. On the other hand when you are one of the best in the league, or at least paid like one, you really should be able to the difference maker yourself. Like Draisatl leads the league in goals and his regular linemates 5 on 5 are Podkolzin and Kapanen. His GM literally gave him a busting 23 years old and a waiver pick up, and his coach play him with Nurse and Stecher, and he STILL scores.

I don't expect Petey to be THAT good, but if he is completely offensively inept if not playing with the best defenseman in the league...well then his contract may have been a giant mistake that will cripple the team until 2031.

but but but he scored a lot of pp goals recently and since Nov 9 he had an 1.4 pts per game avg!! Definitely should be excused for all of his underperformance! All the criticizers are wrong!!

Best thing we can hope for is a an amnesty buyout or a scenario where he elects to mutually terminate his contract.

This is absolute garbage.
Im still clinging to the hope that he can return to his dominant self. Whether thats healing from injuries, or seeing a shrink, or getting an exorcism etc. If hes chronically or permanently injured and we are stuck with that contract, he will ruin this franchise.

Yup

We should we talking about "wow look at how good everyone's stats are with Petey compared to without him"

And not "well he doesn't get to play with Hughes enough so what do you expect from him?"

And I don't even really care about WOWY's, I'm just concerned about how Petey looks himself and it just hasn't been good enough. He had a little stretch there where it looked like he was getting back to form, but he got to like 80% and then fell back down.

I joked last game that Sasson had a better period than Petey has had in like 60 games but in reality it wasn't even a joke, it's actually true. Dude cannot take over a period let alone a game, and at his salary it should happen on the regular.

Whether fans like it or not, I think the trade watch is officially on for Pettersson. Rutherford's comments about needing to add two players in order to compete means a big ticket has to go out the door for it to feasibly work cap wise.

Trading Pettersson at this point would be pointless. We're not remotely winning that trade because what team is sending us an equivalent piece back while being able to take on 11.6M?

Knew the kneejerk takes would be out.

I wonder if some of these fans actually prefer a terrible team performance where they can criticize whomever they want, versus a team win like the Panthers game.

Petey was bad last game, and so was every single other player with the possible exception of Sasson.

He is right now playing better than Pettersson but... Maybe I am reading his stats wrong but he scored most of his points with McDavid.

3 Goals for 1 against playing with the linemates you listed. So technically correct but tiniest of sample sizes.

Imagine characterizing criticism of a player that has played poorly for almost a calendar year as “knee jerk”.
