I'm beginning to wonder if Pettersson eventually heads out of town the same way Bure did. I mean the ridiculous and relentless scrutiny of players in this market is beyond alarming.

Almost from the day he signed that contract the reporting and speculation about this player has been 'over the top'. And even Tocchet, who's been mostly patient with the local media guys, is starting to show his irritation.

Media scrutiny has not been this soft for decades.

If the management and coaches and players cant handle this. Softball questions from the few medis guys at home games. Team employees on roadtrips asking even fuffier questions... I dont know.

Bure seemed a lot happier in South Florida than he ever was in Vancouver. Sometimes a 'vacuum market' like that is what some players need.

Bure came from the Soviet Union and probably wanted the freedom of a no pressure market. Add to that he got screwd here by the xenophobia and management f***ing with his contract.

I think there is still something up with his skating, whether it be health related or just habits.

One play against a top player like Point isn't the be all end all, but Petey doesn't look all that tired and he gets absolutely smoked in a race where Petey had a bit of a head start and the inside lane.

The skating looks really labored there, and that was on Sunday.

Petterssons top speed this season is exactly the same as Elias Lindholms.

And if he really can't deal with the criticism he's getting now then yeah... maybe he should play in somewhere like South Florida or Utah. Cuz this is really nothing

The best thing Pettersson has done so far this season is shut down his social media accounts......the mainstream press you can deal with.......but the on-line trolls, hackers and mean-streeters, you can do without. And unfortunately in a lot of Canadian markets, they're ever present.

I agree with this -- it's a bit preposterous to suggest Pettersson has genuinely faced some sort of pressure-cooker in a stripped-down media environment. (And Tocchet's little outburst seemed out of left field, except that he was smiling when he said it and I think it's been blown somewhat out of proportion).

All that said, it doesn't even have to be true; a player could just think it is true (or convince himself it is to justify demanding a trade somewhere sunny) and still would have the leverage to force his way out. So it has been a nagging concern, not gonna lie.

Looking back at last year's contract machinations involving Pettersson, it's still not clear to me whether or not Allvin and Co. were serious about trading him.

At the start of last season, he and his agent were adamant that they wouldn't be negotiating a new deal with Vancouver until the season was over. But that seemed to change when rumors surfaced of a potential blockbuster deal between the Canucks and the Hurricanes, with guys like Necas, Kotkaniemi and even Jarivs potentially in the mix.

That's point at which the parties came together and Pettersson signed. Maybe he really believed the Canucks were serious about trading him. And if they were serious once, they could be again.

The implied threat to trade EP was more about asset management than an actual hockey trade to improve the roster right now.

Yes but you have to negotiate in a position of strength and the willingness to trade any assets is a show of strength...I still maintain that they would pull the trigger on any trade that would improve them short of trading Hughes....

Thought he played a quality 2 way game last night. Didn't factor in any offence but his line did a good job defensively and at getting pucks deep.

Miller got the Barkov assignment so not surprising.

They used the D pretty evenly outside of that other than they definitely tried to keep Forbort away from the Panthers top line and threw Hughes in to replace him with Friedman for a bunch of shifts.

Will be interesting as Debrusk Sherwood gives them better 5v5 defensive and match up presence than Kuzmenko Mikhayev or Hoglander Mikhayev. Especially if Hoglander stays with Miller/Boeser

Right or wrong it is reality and no pie in the sky hand wringing will ever change it. Do I agree or like it? No. But in the words of a past Canuck "It is what it is".

I can't think of a believable return that would benefit the subtraction of Hughes ...I think he is untouchable...
