Elias Pettersson.. Playoff Ghost

It is an excuse. Almost any player that has played the whole season can probably say they have something nagging or some pain somewhere. Who is playing at 100% by the time the playoffs start? Let alone into the 2nd round of the playoffs. It's not enough of an explanation, imo. To talk like he is the only one to play through something is nonsense.

You're definitely wrong.

An excuse is him saying "my bad playoffs didn't count because I was injured," an explanation is saying "I played poorly in the playoffs because I was injured." It's not like he disappeared for one series and then blamed a knee injury, he'd been playing bad since January and everyone knew it.

I don't buy it. If the injury was significant at all he wouldn't have played an 82 game season.
Having seen him play all his career, he was markedly different around the all-star break. Knee injury and tendinitis is a valid explanation. But it wasn’t bad enough to sit him out and many players play through nagging issues. He couldn’t rise above his issues.

Why do the brains of hockey fans work like this? How is that talking like he's the only one playing through something? The guy's just saying he's been dealing with a knee injury lol

I'm mostly surprised Vancouver wouldn't have rested him. I get that overuse injuries like tendonitis are things you can try to play through, but they're still a bitch to deal with. Makes little sense that he would have played all of the last 30-40 games when he was clearly off.

He had 72 pts in his first 55 games, then 23 points in his next 40, clearly there was an issue.

McDavid missed a few games this season because he had a lower body injury. Maybe his was a little more serious than Petey's though.

Something happened with reading comprehension levels where now if you don't specifically include additional information like "other players can also be injured", it means that the player is stupid and doesn't know that.

Strange. Tocchet said that he isn't injured. Tactics?
He lied. Every team lies about their guys' injuries in the playoffs. It was a dead tell when Tocchet said that, because immediately before he said Petey was not injured, he said, "we don't tell lies here".

Yeah. Whenever you're telling the truth, you always preface that by saying "I'm not lying". Totally normal.
But he should have rested and nursed the injury in january. I do not know who to blame. Tocchet, Pettersson, team medics. Perhaps all of them.
Unclear. In the exit presser, Tocc mentioned that he and the trainers thought they could "keep Petey going". So it's obvious they knew there was an injury, but they hoped it was manageable.

No one, not even me, is excusing Petey's play. He still had to be better. He still had to give more effort in some of the games, even if he was physically limited.

But certainly visually, he was physically limited enough that his game was significantly impacted. He couldn't skate. Had no acceleration. Made him lose most 50/50 battles and races to pucks, because he couldn't get there.

Petey himself isn't using it as an excuse. He acknowledged the injury but he also literally said he played like s***. He's not saying, "oh yeah I can't be blamed now".

Well put, Petey was a noticeably different player than his usual self, injury was evident. He'll have a good offseason and be back to his normal self next year. Great player.
I think he injured his wrist signing the novelty-sized $93MM cheque

I love how people still try to control the narrative by claiming that it’s an excuse or made up way of justifying his struggles.

The guy admitted he’s played like shit. He’s taken responsibility for that, but an inflammatory injury like tendonitis would be a pain in the ass to play through. And it wouldn’t have made a difference if he’d sat the last game or not.

Looking at him it was clear that something was off with his stride, balance and ability to generate any torque in his shot, so it makes sense. Could he have played better? Absolutely. But it doesn’t make him a bum for struggling through injury.

The injury thing is weird.

Why is his coach calling him out if he's injured? Obviously the coach didn't think his injury was that serious.

He called him out because they were pretending he wasn't injured

Literally a point per game player, or higher, for his entire career. Suddenly has a drop off (not a slow decline, full blown cliff drop) midway through the most recent season and goes from averaging well over a ppg to approx. half point per game.

Common sense: Something is obviously wrong with Pettersson. He is playing the worst hockey of his entire career after a year and a half or so of the best hockey of his career. Looks like a completely different player.

Xenophobic, Anti-Canuck posters on HFboards: He's a soft swede. He's lazy. This is who he is. I always knew he was a bum and doesn't care. Just in it for the money. 17 points in his first 17 playoff games? Doesn't matter, those don't count. Setting the SEL record for points at his age? Again, doesn't matter. It's a soft, euro league.

In what sane world is the second take even remotely more plausible?

Remains: why not the heck rest? Heal?

Well, multiple reasons have been speculated. It was a pretty big contract year. He said all along he didn't want to talk contract until season was over so was possibly trying to suck it up? Canucks medical staff doesn't have the best track record with taking the best course of action with injuries (ie. Mikheyev)? Maybe he was hiding the extent of the issue?
