Jack is definitely getting better. 18 months ago this would have been comparing him to Nick Suzuki with an embarrassing number of people picking the second line center.
Same for Petey though.

Like I swear that exact poll happened.

Pettersson is the better all around player. He has games where his defense is what dictates the outcome of the game. The contract situation definitely favours Hughes though. I vote Pettersson simply because he has also been improving year to year and is currently ahead overall as well. It is altogether possible Hughes improves at a faster rate or for longer and becomes the clear better player and on a cheaper contract too, but I am not going to assume that in a projection.

Literally no problem with people who take Hughes on this one though. The contract value is great.

No one’s in the business of embarrassing young players from Switzerland.
with lot's of people having trouble to distinguish between switzerland and sweden you made a very diplomatic comment. :thumbu:

Anyone arguing either of these players is OBVIOUSLY better than the other needs to give their head a shake. I give Pettersson the edge right now but maybe that’s based on personal preference.

The differentiator here will end up being contracts. It’s likely that Pettersson’s next contract worth the Canucks starts with a $10M or $11M given other contracts we’ve seen and a rising cap. And he might sign a 4 or 5 year deal only. In that scenario, Hughes is the person you’d take pretty easily as he is grossly underpaid.

All of y’all getting your shorts in a knot and screeching about vast differences and parsing performance at earlier player ages (on a forward looking question that takes two young guys through their prime) need to take a breath, touch grass, and imagine your comments being read out loud to your family or employer. Yeesh.

Jacks skating is the difference maker, and has a killer instinct on the PP that EP seems to lack. JH is just scary to play against.

Quinn is the guy that really drives this team, could the brothers make a run at league MVP's?.....

EP could be a perennial Selke candidate, you rarely see a forward being such a difference maker at the defensive end, however Jack is more consistent offensively, not necessarily better when both are at their best, but Elias seems to fluctuate between super elite to pretty average offensively. Maybe not average but there are games where he seems to be more dependent on his team mates performing well while Hughes can create more by himself on a more consistent bases, at the other hand Jack has a stronger supporting cast.

Wouldn't a Nico Hischer vs Elias Pettersson poll make more sense
Yep. Nico's 2 goals and zero assists in seven games makes that a really tight poll. It definitely doesn't make sense to compare the two that are neck and neck for top point scorer.

I can agree with this on Petey's end. He needs to show up more consistently this year. However he's still managed to put himself 2nd in point scoring. If he can show more consistency its scary to imagine what he could do. 110-120 points might be within reach. Maybe more. He is a deeply psychological player so the key is in his mind, just putting all the bs aside and playing.
