With cap rise, PPG players will probably be 9.5N, 90pt guys will be like 10-11M+ depending on position and 100pt guys are like 12-14M and then there’s Mcdavid at like whatever number he wants but probably 15 minimum.

If you look at the number of forwards that are in their mid 20's and have scored a point per game so far in their careers, there are less than 10 of them.

Pettersson is getting paid not just because he's putting up points, but also because he should continue to put up points at a reasonable rate moving forward.

That's why comparing his contract to JT Miller's is unreasonable. Miller is 30 and will start seeing age related decline as he moves into his mid 30's. It was also signed 2 years earlier when the cap projections were significantly lower.

A better comparison is William Nylander. He's 2 years older and put up points at about a .9 ppg rate but is paid the same. Pettersson also scores more goals than him. Pettersson could have easily gotten significantly more on the open market.

Of course, this contract could have been avoided by just giving him a long term deal when he came off his ELC like he wanted. Imagine if we had Pettersson for $8m and Hughes for $7m right now.

A realistic expectation would be similar production to what Nylander brings since they have nearly identical contracts (although Pettersson is much better defensively).

Some analytics models (such as Dom Luszczyszyn's net ratings model) have Pettersson ranked ahead of Nylander in terms of overall performance this season.

Nylander has an advantage offensively due to Pettersson's slow start this season. However, that's still more than outweighed by Pettersson's defensive impact.

You are the only one who thinks he is healthy now...

Keep digging.

Should be fixable with proper training and time.

They let it get really bad last year if it didnt go away during the summer.

Starts a home stand, magically heals instantly
Yup it was an injury. Nothing mental there

You and your funky buddies are the ONLY people on the planet who thinks he is now healthy.

He went from 95th percentile skater to below 50th percentile skater. The annyoing Edge proves this even when your eyes dont catch it.

You think he looks back to his usual self because he has points..? Are you f***in serious?

Its great to see that the points are coming, and clearly Pettersson is improving. But I still think he's at like 70% or his potential, and looks bad compared peak Pettersson, but he also looks two to three times as good as he looked to start the year.

No one denies the Edge stats. It's just a false equivalence to say that because he isn't as explosive and skating as much it MUST be an injury. There are a lot of variables and for the life of me I can't figure out how you disqualify the mental side of a player - especially for one we know had a recent problem with social media narratives.

Oh? So what is your theory?

He has said he has a issue with his knee.

So he lied about that and instead what..?

Nobody, as far as I know, is disqualifying the mental side.

There is very obviously a mental part to EPs troubles.

There are a handful of posters here trying to carry the conversation as if he has just been healthy through out his troubles and it makes me insane to read.

You don't know whether he is healthy or not. You just cite edge data which you think proves your point. It doesn't. And realistically most players will be dealing with something nagging throughout the year. Varying degrees of severity to that I know. Look at Hronek - shoulder ends up okay news but decides to fix something lower body with surgery on something we all had no idea about.

Not as hot of a topic for me right now anyways. Over the last 12 games Pettersson has looked worlds better than his injury in January and carrying over to the first 12 games to start the season. At this point I think his poor play is being a bit exaggerated although I would like to see more explosiveness and confidence. Against Detroit he had a couple moments where he attacked the defenders with speed to the middle of the ice- that's basically the Pettersson we are hoping for.
