We're talking about one certain poster here asking Petey to do things only one other player has done in NHL history correct? To be clear I wasn't engaging with such posts.

That specific scenario yes… but read the thread… it’s filled with unjustified expectations.

Not only that, but his cap hit % was only brought up because of this one poster… so the entire conversation is based from that.

Ok. I didn't read every single post carefully but I didn't really see a lot of posters posting unjustified expectations.

Regardless, it doesn't change my point which I have expressed consistently here. Petey is paid to be one of the best players in the game, he wants to be one of the best players in the game, and we need him to be one of the best players in the game.

I think the PP thing is just coaching decision, Tocchet runs P1 and he loves his point shot and tip in

But then why have Petey on the first unit frankly? If that's Tocchet's plan I'd rather just have Brannstrom or Hronek on the first unit alongside Hughes to reduce the likelihood of any shorthanded chances against (which we've had a bunch of this year to be fair). The second unit can have Brannstrom/Hronek and Petey on the point and hopefully, at least his shot could be used.

It feels useless having Petey on the first unit and not using his shot which is one of his biggest strengths.

Where are you getting the 21st highest paid player stat from? Are you counting expired contracts like Ovechkin and Malkin's previous deal?

When he signed the contract I went on cap friendly then redid the math for the top 50 (since their table was for cap % at time of signing but the cap was going up before his contract kicked in). It took me forever since I had to adjust everyones cap% by a year. I posted my result in a previous Pettersson thread that he was tied for 21st. So I am 100% confident when he signed his deal he had the 21st highest contract by cap percent at time of contract start in the league, only including active contracts. Right now I don't know, some may have expired in the interim and others may have signed for a higher percent, capfriendly isnt around.

At his paygrade it should happen once every half dozen games or so. Not saying it has to be a coast-to-coast but something where he single-handedly produces a goal, the "something out of nothing" types.

I don’t know if that was ever really a huge part of his game, was it (unless we are talking about a beautiful passing play, or a big shot)?

He’s on a 46 goal and 109 point pace over his last 9 games and is coming out of his funk.

That’s what we need from him.

To make those game-breaking plays, you need to be able to skate at top level, whether its beating defensemen with speed or agility. Petey clearly has the hands for it, but NHL players are too good that you can't just beat them with hands alone. Petey has been very good lately and getting even better, but I think his knee is still bothering him. He still doesn't have the top speed he had before, and he isn't twisting/turning as much either. I think he'll get there eventually, but for now I'm just happy he is productive again.

IMO, his gamebreaking ability was his shot. Not the PP one timer from the point, but those where he just rips it top shelf from out of nowhere. Basically unstoppable. That shot has been completely missing, and I wonder if it's injury related or not.

His speed has taken a big hit, according to NHL Edge he went from top 10% a couple of seasons ago to below average now. It's nice he's back to making plays but he's not able to back off the defence with his speed like he used to.

Yes, definitely. But he's also just not moving his feet and attacking like he used to, and Tochett has repeatedly referenced him not moving his feet. So its tough to say what the cause is for that. Is it an injury, or confidence/mental, or a combination? I don't think it could just be an injury because I'd still expect to see him attack with the puck more, even without great results.

Hard to get his shot away if he can't create separation. Its hard to create separation when you can't generate speed or pivot away from checks.

I think Petey has been really good at finding ways to be productive despite his limitation, but he is definitely still limited by something (his knee, or confidence, or "lack of moving his feet", or a combination of them).

I'm actually very impressed that he has found a way to be productive when he is not able to skate as well as before. That is like one of the major factor causing the older players' decline, when they lose their speed they are done. Petey somehow found a way around it, I think he deserves a lot of credit for that.
