Basically all of the merchants were rounded up and buried alive far underground after they were accused of religious heresy. Then they started a chant about despair which to be my belief created or summoned the frenzied flame. In the dungeon place you find all of their bodies which leads to the place where you go for the lord of the frenzied flame ending.
