Been the #1 dman for the Panthers through their window and is the clear #1 dman on the market this offseason. Panthers are missing him pretty badly right now, which might make them reconsider letting him walk.

But what do we think he is getting offered if he hits UFA? Is he making 10M July 1st?

I think the leg injuries will tamper the market, for sure. Still may be the highest valued UFA dman if he makes it to market, but I’d go slightly less than the Chychrun extension. He’s a year older and much less influential offensively at this stage than Chychrun and the mobility is a concern to invest in.

I’d prefer Gavrikov but Ekblad has a Cup and more name brand value.

I’d also quibble with him being the Panthers #1 defenseman through their Cup era…I’d say that’s Forsling, clearly.

It’s Forsling. For as much as you’re obsessed with them, you should know that. He’s our #2. He’s not getting 10 lmao

Oh brother. Yeah he’s important but he’s not our #1 lmao. Ekblad is not getting more than he is now and it won’t be long term.

Seems like wishful thinking to me. I can't see him not getting a raise with the cap rising like it is. 10M is the new 8M.

He got 10% for his last contract he signed a long time ago. 10% assuming he gets no raise on the 95.5M cap is 9.5M. 10M is not crazy at all

3x10 with the sharks

Done, but I think he’d get a ton more guaranteed 7*$8.5-9M. He’s the only surefire top 4 RHD though Gavrikov and Provorov can play both sides. Fabbro looks to be a top 4 guy, but was on waivers*

Given his injury history, and miles, not sure I’d want the Sharks to throw that at him, as desperate as we are for a RD. Seems destined to be a a bad contract.

*SJ absolutely should have grabbed him.

Long term no doubt will probably happen.

Maurice system definitely has hid his lack of foot speed, along with playing with Forsling.
I would think most GMs would not want to sign him to a long term deal, but you only need a few bidding on him to then give him that term, to seal the deal, that will probably back fire in 4 years.

He never became that Franchise #1, but he's easily a top pairing defenseman, as long as the system he is in doesn't require great skating.

Still think he may come to an agreement to stay among the Palm Trees, but I don't think he's now a must keep if the AAV or term doesn't make sense. But he would need to take a discount on AAV and maybe Zito gives him that 8th year if he stays around 7mil

I don't think Zito will give more than Forsling if he wants eight years.

My only thought would be that:
1. Forsling really took a sweetheart deal
2. Now that the cap is really set to blow up over the next few seasons a 7mil AAV ~= Forslings deal
True. But eight years is too much for him considering his injuries. The last one or two years are probably going to be dead cap. So I'm thinking if he wants 8 the AAV should come down a lot. I don't mind 7.5M for five. Zito will make the right call.

He will easily make more than Forsling on the open market so good luck with that
So would Forsling on the open market, but Zito will look for other options if an agreement isn’t made. Have to imagine he’s in hot water with management, he’s not exactly standing in a commanding place atm. It certainly won’t end the deal and I think they want him back, but I’d guess he’s hurt his negotiating abilities a bit. Could be totally wrong, though.

Forsling got a sweetheart deal sure, but he was never going to get much more than Skjei.

Completely different situation now that we know how much the cap is going up over the next few years. If Ekblad hits UFA he will almost certainly get 8M+.

What? Says who? He's younger, is a career +156, plays top pair (and is arguably the #1, most believe so) on a Cup winning team. He was going to get paid on the market. Probably from Nashville.

I don't disagree that someone will likely overpay Ekblad, most of us just hope Zito doesn't do that. While he's missed out there, I for one am skeptical of his longevity due to his lack of speed and previous leg injuries.

Skjei got 7M at 30 years old after having a 47 point season and playing in a prime shutdown role vs elite competition.
Hanifin got 7.35M at 27 years old after multiple strong seasons in Calgary as a strong 2-way defender.

That was Forsling's market if he hit UFA. He is a similar caliber defenseman to those 2, thus he was not getting much more than that. That is not a knock at Forsling by any stretch of the imagination. All 3 are very good defensemen but none have ever scored 50+ points in a season. Hell, look what Slavin just signed for in July, just under 6.4M. And he's widely considered a top 10 defenseman in the league because of his defensive prowess. That is just simple how the market was a year ago, now we have the cap projected to be over 100M in 2 years
