Player Discussion: Ehlers

I’m leaning into the idea of signing no one and giving young players a chance. Maybe get some stopgap solutions to give the Jets a chance this year, but the next real shot for the cup will depend on a few of Yager, Lambert, Chibrikov, Barlow becoming legit middle six weapons in my view.

The problem with that is the aging of our core. You never know when a player is going to age out but we have several key players who are at a stage where we know it is close. That magnifies the need to get the most out of each year.

Also look at how long it took Snerg and Perfetti to grow into impact players in the NHL.

We are talking D plus 7 for Snerg and D plus 5 for Cole.

Most of our top farm talent is in the d plus 3 to 4 range.

Ehlers will sign a 8 year contract to get 1 year with Toews? 2nd line will play more than 15-16m?
you sell that we have someone better then names as the 2c so his usage 5v5 will go up next season with the plan of acquiring a long term fit later on

if there is still a chance of signing him which nobody has said he has ruled out then signing toews should only help on the usage front

Toews prior to his leave was closer to Names. And post Toews' 1 year, it's essentially where the Jets have been in most of Ehlers' time here.

yes, it's not a perfect solution on names but I think he will have more respect for toews then what fans do, also I said sell him on it...

We'll have to see then. The Jets sans PLD usually have had 35-40 pt 2Cs and tried to get upgrades so I don't view it as much different next offseason. Kind of back in the same spot.

I think Ehlers' course of action is already made regardless of Toews or not. However, open to being wrong if he does sign back prior to FA and cites Toews' signing as a key reason.

yeah it's a long shot but I just feel that if usage is the issue then it's easier to sell him that his usage will go up with someone like toews then it would with the same center he's had the past 2 seasons

Ya, it’s a fine balance. I don’t think it’s impossible that Yager plays a year or even a half season on the moose and is ready to go at 2C. Could Salomonsson be playing with Morrissey by the end of the year, bumping Demelo down to the 3rd pair? Could Barlow improve his skating a ton over the offseason and come in to score 25 goals in the middle six next year? Could Lambert put on some weight and put up 50 points next year?

I don’t think any of those are likely, but they would be the difference between being a 2nd round team or a team that pushes through.
I think Yager's time on the Moose might be more for physical development than hockey-wise. He already plays a "pro-ready" game as a centre (right side of the puck, doesn't cheat for offense, etc) similar to Copp when he came out of NCAA (he skipped the AHL and went straight to the Jets after his D+2 season, which is where Yager is now). The difference is that Yager is only around 170lbs and Copp was a manchild
