Player Discussion: Ehlers

Agree. Ehlers is the only one who adds movement to the pp. And it seems like it was a bit infectious.
But eventually it started moving back toward stagnation.

People forget that he was on pp1 to start the year before last and it did nothing with him on it then.

I think most of the improvement was better coaching. I'm sure our pp coach can create a role for Cole to succeed in. We actually started to see that round 1 in the playoffs.

Typical oversimplification

You can't just have one guy all of a sudden moving around making shit up and 4 other guys playing off him and be successful

Maybe watch more closely and you'll see how the changes were drawn up and coached into the power play... if you recall, even the 2nd unit had higher success than with Lauer

I also thought things really did get stagnant as the year went on. Ehlers being that rover really did add a level of unpredictability and broken coverages we did not have before this past season.

I agree proper PP coaching was the biggest reason for the surge.

Maybe we even have a totally different setup this year that is tailored for this year's personnel.

Yeah coaching has a much more magnified effect on special teams. Our PP coaching was so much bett

Ehlers played his designed role extremely well. His skating and creativity made him pretty unique for the role.

Doesn't mean we're sunk. As you mentioned, PP2 was great as well.

I've always wanted to see Perfetti in the bumper on PP1. It wouldn't surprise me if he is as good, or even better, than Ehlers was

Him and Ehelrs are both super creative players, but Ehlers to me is more of a "mad scientist" type whose genius is outside of the box of how most players think

I suspect part of the coaching was to motivate Ehlers to be "the guy" on the powerplay and have a bit of freedom. Hope they can manage to use Perfetti similarly but I have some doubts.

Believe it or not, I'd bet that most of that motion was at least somewhat choreographed. Not in a "you go here and he goes there" kind of way, but more in a general "creating lanes and filling gaps" sort of way

As I said in an earlier post, things happen so fast at that level that having 4 guys read and react off of Ehlers improvisation would create chaos, not what we saw last year when they were clicking

People are sleeping on Cole here. He has superior scoring rates on the pp then Ehlers has over the last two years.

If the coach tailors something for his game the pp will be fine.

You're right, it's not like Ehlers is just doing whatever he wants, I'm sure it's all practiced and everyone knows to do X when Z happens etc so tons of this is coaching. Still, feel like Ehlers was given a lot of freedom to do try different things and take risks on the powerplay.

I hope it was mostly coaching, but even so recreating it might be difficult as Ehlers has a pretty unique skillset to bring to the PP

I will say this about Ehlers on the PP...

His creative nature led to him want to start moving, which led to everyone else having to move too (which was maybe your point in the first place) in the way in which it was was drawn up

In other words, coaches said "here are some movement options that will open up dead space and create passing lanes" but someone still has to take the initiative to start that process, and a lot of times it was Nik.

Less creative guys like schief and JoMo are sometimes just content to stand in their spots and try to fling the puck around

Well most wanted a self rental and it's looks like for most of the rentals the Jets have traded for he will be moving on.

Who wanted a self-rental?

I've been calling it that since he was neither extended nor traded last off-season but I certainly never wanted it.

Edit: I wanted him signed. Choosing between traded or rented is a little tougher. It would have depended on the trade return.

This is how I see it too. It was a nice match for the scheme and player. Perfetti will bring some creativity, just a totally different kind. There is some simplicity to Cole's creativity that will help in it's own way.

Movement can be coached in, though.

In drills you just make the rule that when you receive the puck on the PP you have to take at least 3 steps before you pass or shoot. Get it built into the players muscle memory.

I totally agree with Mort here. The Jets could have got a really good player for Ehlers in last years off season, but they end up with zilch, for a great player like Nik. I don’t like the call here.

I do understand Chipman not wanting to take a chance on signing Ehlers for $ 8 - 9 mil per year, considering how fragile he is, and likely won’t play “ full seasons” Can’t really blame Jets managmnt for this, but at least trade him when you had the chance. If he was traded we still likely would have finished in 1st place overall, and have received a high quality player in return, that we could resign. Now - nothing.

In this case, considering that many posters on here including myself, think Nik is worth $ 9 to $ 9.5 per year, that will tell you the quality type player we could have got back for Ehlers. There will be a lot of GM’s willing to pay top dollar for Nik.

Personally I think this was a very bad call, on one of the fan’s most liked Jets players on the team.

It will be very sad to see him go, and I hope he finds a team that values his talent, and he does very well.

I will really miss watching Ehlers play.

I’m struggling to understand how someone could think Ehlers is an amazing player, but also thinking that not having him would have zero impact on the teams performance…

It would have relatively little impact on the teams performance, and where they finished, because we would have got a 25 goal scorer in return, and a total 50 point player( with assists) had we traded him.

Instead, we get nothing back.
