Player Discussion: Ehlers

I'd be happy to offer Chibrikov + He + 1st + 3rd. Specifically because we're paying with smaller LWs to get a higher caliber smallish LW. I'd probably not do it if it was Lambert instead of Chibrikov, because we lack right shot wingers and C's (not sure which Lambert will be).

Anyways, my offer doesn't seem painful enough to be a winning bid.

Its at least in the ballpark.

Wow is this true or more guesses from Elliott?

I thought I heard that last summer, too - but from the Canes

I'm not sure that I buy this because it would have been us dealing Nik to Colorado, since they got Necas in January

It's things like this that makes me question just how invested Chevy actually is in bringing him back. Last summer wasn't the first time we've heard he's been made available.
this is actually pretty old news, we heard this last off season

It does make you wonder, like does management just not see how important he is, because if they don't I guarantee you they will next season when he is gone and they are stuck with a second line of Perfetti, Names and Iafallo.

They may be pretty down on him after a few rough playoffs outings. He stepped it up this year but man was it close. We were 1.6 seconds away from Ehlers possibly being one of the whipping boys of this years playoffs after bobbling a pass at the blueline and then whiffing on the shot. Luckily he became a part of Winnipeg hockey lore with one of the best slap passes I have ever seen. It's really hard not to like what Ehlers brings but his injury history and issues in the playoffs up until this season had been glaring. I'd imagine they would have loved to make that Necas trade if he would have been willing to extend.

Yeah maybe, but like I said lets see how they feel when he is gone and stuck with only one top 6 line that can produce.

Oh I know it is. I've always been on the management doesn't value him as highly as the fan base and analytics community does train.

Which makes me question what Chevy means when he says his best foot forward.
I think the org does value him, they tried to trade him for pesce when we lost all our d and were loaded on wingers, after that we didn't hear his name for years in trade rumors until last off season when he was going in with only 1 year remaining, they held on to him, if they didn't value him they would have traded him last off season or at the deadline

Since the org sees everything that you see, plus a tonne of stuff that you don't, it's much more likely that you're missing something that leads you to overvalue Ehlers

I don't believe I said they don't. I just don't think they have him in the top rung with Scheifele, KC, Helle, and JoMo.

He's a piece they value but have been willing to deal. If the individual connected to Danish hockey is accurate then Fly himself hasn't always felt valued as much as he feels he should here.

So that to me bags the question, how much are the Jets willing to spend to keep him here as a FA in a market where he's one of the few impact wingers available.

I.e Are they willing to pay top rung prices for a player they don't value in the top rung.

In the latest episode of 32 Thoughts,,,, Kyle Bukauskas asked Elliotte Friedman for the latest on Nikolaj Ehlers which starts at the 39:06 mark. Friedman indicates he’s hearing that Ehlers is in the same boat as the Leafs Mitch Marner, which is that he’s going to July 1st to test free agency. He added that nobody will confirm that Ehlers has given Winnipeg an “absolute no” but that the feeling “out there” is he’s going to July 1st.

Kinda figured. No agent is going to give an absolute no as that removes one bidder, and the fall back option if the market isn't where they want it to be.

The CBA makes it possible for players like Ehlers to take their shot at free agency, and I guarantee Ehler's agent is telling him exactly that. You have to take your shot when you get it. That and how much more money the agent gets when the player signs that bigger contract. Unless the Jets can make an offer that the agent feels will be the max Ehlers would potentially get on the market, he's going to test it.

Yeah I think we need to come to terms with the fact that Ehlers is likely gone so we have to shift our focus to acquiring a top 6 C and a top 6 W this summer. Tall order for sure.

Yup, which brings me back to the post I made earlier this morning. Are the Jets prepared to make a top rung offer for a player they likely don't value as a top rung player.

I think with Ehlers, he sees himself as a regular top line guy, while the Jets 1) don’t see him that way and 2) don’t see room on the top line for him if they did.
