Player Discussion: Ehlers

If Connor continues playing like he has so far this year? Guaranteed he will get at least 11. If not in Wpg then somewhere else.

It isn't just his scoring this year. It is all of his game. If he had played this way earlier in his career he would have got 8.5 last time - in Wpg. So you are betting his play drops off.
You really think Chevy would have given him 8.5m? He was 22 years old with 3 season's experience.
I would guess 9.25m-9.75m.
Of course his play will drop off in the years to come. He will be 29 when this deal expires.

If Nylander can get 12 mil kc can get 10+

Wrap Ehlers up in a deal with NYI for Dobson.
A re-signed Ehlers, Pionk and Lambert for a re-signed Dobson...something like 6 x 9.5m.
What the hell, I'd throw in Stanley...

Is Ehlers still hurt? He is still getting his points, but, we rely on him to drive the second line and it’s not going.
We could bring in an expensive 2c to help him, but, how much money can you have tied into the second line?
Also, I’d think he’d have a contract year boost. He has been good on pp and on our winning streak.

I'm not sure what's going on with him, but he's looked WAY out of sync at 5v5

Maybe it's a chemistry thing.. but he's doing his old "passes to nobody", turnovers at the offensive O line, etc... he's been a far cry from at his best

That said... I love him on PP1. His tendency to wander in the zone forces the 4 other players into motion, which i think helps it a ton. I'm not sure if that's how it's drawn up or if it just happens, but it's a net positive IMO

Yeah I chuckled reading this because I thought the exact same thing. Him wandering around forces everyone to move around and it makes all the difference in a good way.

Giving him the green light to do that is obviously a season changing trajectory move by Payne. Fantastic hire.

I would say it is drawn up, as the motion seems very purposeful to open up seems. A couple weeks back Arniel also mentioned in one of his pressers that they change the movement on the PP, depending on the defensive system of the opposition which would strongly suggest intent.

Trade him,I just think his play making decisions are so erratic that building a cohesive line around him will always be problematic 5x5,it is little things like his offensive blue line fandangles that in a close playoff game are really magnified, I get he is well loved amongst many and I'm not hear to change that, just my personal observations.

Nik fits well together with Iafallo and Lowry, keep them together!!!

Nik doesnt fit well with Perfetti, can we please stop this experiment???
That line is so effective. Nik is good enough defensively that he doesn't hurt that lines ultimate purpose. Lowry and Iafallo both have the speed and enough offensive chops to not mute what Nik does best. That's a line that can beat it's matchups and contribute offensively.

Then it frees up Niederrater to play with Perfetti and give him some beef. When Appleton and Namestnikov come back it will be interesting to see what Arniel does.

I can't help but think things will go back to the way they were for the most part...

Yeah you are probably right but hopefully Arniel will surprise.

I totally get if he reunites the Lowry line when Apples is back - that line is money, BUT I hope he gets creative with that second line. Maybe Kupari and Perfetti will build a bit of chemistry.

If nothing else it's a nice line blender option we can go back to

I like Ehlers with Lowry for a few reasons.

It gives him more ice time at 5v5, which increases his impact.

Ehlers plays better with a C like Lowry who gives the Jets more puck possession and moves the puck quickly. Namestnikov hangs onto the puck too long and often just loses possession before moving it. Also, Lowry goes to the net and draws D there, giving Ehlers more space in the high slot.

It provides more overall balance in the lines, especially scoring.

Ehlers Lowry Apples could be an option too. Bumps Iafallo to the 4th, but brings a little more speed to the line

Loved watching the ELI line. Muscle, brains, speed and flair -- Lowry is such a smart player, Fallow is an elite digger and checker, and Ehlers gets to carry and be first shooter on a line where he also doesn't have to be first one back, which must mean fewer km on the clock over 3 periods despite the additional icetime.

Effective and entertaining, might be worth keeping rolling and have Appleton drop to add some experience and scoring (relative) to the 4th.

I wonder if a 2C proved too expensive we get someone as a 3C instead (assuming we don't use one of our young guns in that role)?

Great idea -- feels like Arniel is a bit more open to the idea of building lines based on overall impact and complementary skillsets as opposed to going strictly by position or role. Same logic suggests that a player like Kupari could work well as a centre between Perfetti and Nino despite his less-than-gaudy counting stats. Or any number of combinations that might elevate a line. Names works hard and is skilled, but he does seem to think a bit behind the play at times -- absolutely fine given his original role on the team -- but another player who isn't necessarily a star might fit that second line a bit better.

IMO that's what made Stats so brilliant -- not the quickest, not the best release or trickiest hands, but elite-level vision and old man guile that made him both an ace complementary player and real-time tutor for the kids.

Does seem like Arniel prefers the hand-mixer to the blender when it comes to reworking lines as in-game adjustments. Makes me a bit more hopeful for the playoffs.

So do we look at maybe playing Perfetti at center again, but this time on a more sheltered 3rd line with Nino and maybe Apples or Iafollo?
