What Chevy plans to do is unknown but the possibility exists that term length may end up as the deciding factor.
That deffo is a Jets ace in the hole - will it be enough?
I really think that playoffs are going to have an impact in this.
Yeah i think your last statement is one his biggest boosters and folks more conservative about him agree on universally. Needs to have an impact in the playoffs this year.

Yeah, I'd be shocked if Ehlers gets an 8 year contract, given that Mark and Helle didn't. Ehlers' risk of physical injury/decline is much higher than either of those two, so it would potentially be a huge financial albatross for the team.
The other option, if you're Chevy, is to offer a high AAV over a shorter duration, giving Ehlers the opportunity to win with this core and then go somewhere else(or back to Europe, in one piece) in his mid-thirties.

I think that if the Jets have a good playoff run and Ehlers is a good contributor, then the Jets and Ehlers will probably both be motivated to extend the contract.
If the Jets disappoint in the playoffs, both sides will likely look to move in a different direction. I think that's been Chevy's perspective, in any case.
Makes sense. It seems likely that both sides are willing to see how things playout before talking contract. No way to tell which side is more likely to push for a contract.

I am at peace with “the process”. Chevy has proven to be a very good deal maker with his existing roster. If there is a deal to be had then fine. If it’s like the Andrew Ladd situation where the two sides can’t find common ground then so be it. With Chevy and signings, I am no further ahead tying to figure him out than I was in the summer of 2011.
I just can't remember a pending UFA getting to July 1st and not being traded or resigned by the organization.

This was my thought all along too but it looks like it might have backfired on Chevy with the announcement of a rise in the salary cup.
Just look at the recent Rantanen and Chychrun contacts ... its going to cost a bit more to sign Ehlers now where Chevy could have signed him around $8 million before the season started.
Ya, I suppose he was a key contributor that left for Flames for nothing, but not many of those players over the years and definitely not a ppg player that Ehlers is. Pionk too.
If Appleton and Iafallo walk, that would be similar to Frolik. Chiarot, Myers and Tanev would be examples too but they weren't core players like Ehlers and Pionk. Those players were fine to have walk, as they were paid far too much at the time for the Jets cap structure. Maybe that's the same for Ehlers and Pionk this year. They know they will be paid far too much, and are fine with letting them walk.
Ya I forgot about Dillon too. Brother.
Everyone of those players were paid too much for the Jets cap structure and we were pretty happy to see them go at the time. Pionk seems to fit in that earlier group of players that will be paid too much in FA and we'll be happy to see them go.
Ehlers seems different.

Well said. Chevy has mostly been a very good negotiator, while being a hell of a grinder. 90% or so I think he has done well. For now it is all about this playoff run. It’s been the best regular season of the 2.0 era IMO. Things feel a bit different as we march towards the playoffs but the central is stacked so who knows how this plays out. It’s been allot of fun to witness.
You can replace those other guys you mentioned, but Ehlers is in a class by himself, and very very hard to replace that kind of talent Nik brings.
I think they'll likely both be paid 'too much'.
The considerations have to be:
- Team need
- Potential longevity
- How 'too much'
Ehlers is often injured and his game revolves around his speed. He's pretty likely to underperform his contract and could end up a buyout. Pionk has been injured recently too, but probably has a bit of an edge here.
No idea which player would be more overpaid, but it might be Pionk wth the premium on top 4 RHD.
I think your statement is more based on emotional attachment than reality for the org.

Pionk is a tough one for me. He is having a bounce back season but he has been hit or miss and has had some good seasons and some bad seasons. He does play well with a stud like Samberg so that hedges the risk a bit (assuming Samberg extends here). With Ehlers it will be hard to replace his level of productivity, with PP1 usage he is a PPG player being deployed on a less than perfect 2nd line where he is the driver. That level of stand alone talent doesn’t grow on trees. That being said I share your concerns about his durability as he ages.
Not sure what the plan is, Chevy has a way off keeping me guessing.
My question would be can Perfetti replace Ehelers production next year if given Ehlers increased minutes. He's been roughly a ppg the last 23 gamed with less then ideal usage. If he can then you are really looking at someone to replace 40 to 50 points in Cole's current role which I think would be more doable for a guy like Lambert.
Pionk is tough for me. He's going to cost around 8 million and he's not a perfect player. Problem is Salomonsson is still likely a couple years away from top 4.

Without a 2nd line centre and without Ehlers I just think that is too much to expect. They had trouble this season at times and that is with a prime Nik, and an emerging Perfetti. I think they would need a 60 point type winger if they want to rebuild the second line.
$8 million is really expensive for a guy like Neil but it is what it is.
Maybe it's a by committee thing, too?
If we lose lets say Ehlers and Appleton, does a 'step forward' year of Perfetti along with Lambert and Chibrikov get us there? We are one of the top offensive producers in the NHL, I think this setup might actually be better for the team as now you have two guys in Lambo and Chibrikov that can move around the lineup if needed.
I honestly don't know what we do about Pionk. I think the team re-signs him and then figures out the latter part of his contract when it comes. Our window will still be open next year and unless we can find a way to replace Pionk with a top 4 offensive RHD the club is likely to overpay for him.
