Ehlers why Didnt We Trade Him

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Nik is turning into what I always hoped he would be.
He's all over the ice,o-zone, D-zone, along the boards.... he's building chemistry and driving play with his linemates, he can be successful with different players..... He's shining in big moments....

and I think he likes it here. I think he wants to win here. I think he loves the white out. Last night vs the caps you could feel it..that OT goal he was pretty much saying "THIS IS MY HOUSE" and I think we re sign him.
Therein lies the problem

I think the best thing Chevy can do to keep Ehlers is commit to finding another good/great player who plays with the same style

That said, if personally like how Ehlers adapts his game to play with Lowry. A little more north/south, focuses on getting pucks deep and starting the cycle, etc

That candy moment was funny. He is definitely the most loved jet.

.
Bottom line is if Ehlers wants more than Scheif, let him walk.
He's gonna ask for, roughly, same contract, just below or Scheif and Bucky, on a long deal. Perhaps 8.25 or 8 depending on length.

But Chevy need to sign more than Nik, Samberg and Vilardi we are gonna want to keep on long contracts. I like Iafallo as well, no i love his versatility, he can be moved up and down the lineup. Can we keep all of these? I dont know how much capspace we got

Possibly, it's what guys like Marner want.
Sure, but Marner's demands also cuffed the Leafs and made it difficult to sign other players at a fair value, so they can win. I also dont think Ehlers is just looking for money, like Marner. But Chevy is the guy to get Samberg, Vilardi and Ehlers to sign long contracts, at a fair rate. If one signs the other will be more likely to leave a bit of money on the table as well.

They may leave some on the table but they won't take significantly less than market value.

If we are talking strictly UFA (the RFA will be here no matter what next year)

1) Ehlers
2) Pionk
3) 2 of Appleton, Tanev, Iafallo

We can afford two of the options above

I still think he stays in Winnipeg, he can only get a 8 year deal here and i don't think he wants to leave.
I highly doubt that’s true. If he can get an 8 year deal here, he can get the same from many other teams. Ideally I’d like to see him at 6 yrs, but he’ll likely want 7 - 8 yrs

Ugh, I fear Ehlers being an ultimate pro and class act is lulling people into a false sense that he's going to sign here.

I hope to God I'm wrong but I just don't see it.
Ehlers will sign where it’s best for him $$$ , but he’ll lean towards staying here, rather than going into an unknown environment, where there could be a lot of team issues

Market value is defined as much as somebody is willing to pay, nothing more, nothing less.

Market value is constantly changing, and involves many factors, like league Overall Cap policies, and also what teams need at any given time.

I think Ehlers could ask for and easily get $ 9.5 mil per year, but whether the Jets would pay that is another question.

Also if Nik wants to stay here, is he prepared to leave money on the table, to sign where he wants to play.

Lot of factors involved here.

The question is how much would he be willing to leave on the table. The difference between say 9.5 and 8 to 8.25 is 9 to 10 ish million over the life of the contract. That isn't insignificant.

Very good point, and I guess we’ll find out.

The Jets are also the only team that can give an 8th year. 8 X $8.25 = $66.0 M. 7 X $9.25 = $64.75 M. The advantage of the 8th year doesn’t get discussed enough because everyone wants the perfect length contract. Chevy might be willing to go long to keep the core together.

Market inflation will be massive this summer. I think Ehlers gets near $10m and Connor will resign for $11-12m.

We'll get Sammy signed but Pionk will likely have to make way for Salo.
