Trying to understand why he never got a call up with Boston, despite having fairly solid numbers in the AHL.

The injuries might be the reason.
Regards to that:
In an interview with Latvian sports media, he revealed that after suffering three consecutive injuries, Boston did not offer him even a minimum AHL contract that would have allowed him to undergo surgery and work toward returning to the roster. While he understands that it's just business, he still found it unpleasant.

After his most recent season in the Czech Extraliga, he was open to talks with any NHL team - except Boston.

Apparently, he was scouted by Wings European scout for 2 years who believes he is better then some players on the roster.
Tralmaks himself said: "Top2 lines are superstars, but I think, I can compete for a spot in 3rd or 4th line."
Regarding salary he'd be making more in Europe, but signed with Wings to fulfill his dream and play in NHL.

imo there is not a single reason why wouldn't he be at least a decent 4th liner.

Yeah, it really impressed me how he was so good at WHC scoring, just in line with many NHLrs.

And how he is the point-driver, nobody like "mcdavid" was pulling him to high stats. He did it himself. And same on that Czech-league team. He was by far the superior scorer there, doing it by himself.

51 points at 48 games, when second best Smolenak had 31 points at 52 games.

Tralmaks had 1.06 points per game
Smolenak had 0.59 points per game.
