Pre-Game Talk: Edmonton vs Vegas

I'm surprised they don't have Singh calling the other series. And I'm glad to see this. Debrusk is what he is, but I thought Jack killed it in the first round.

One comment about Jack though. What was it with him getting names wrong so much in that first round. He called all 82 games and then he's there calling Perry Hyman or other similar mistakes. Wonder if it was some first time network playoff game jitters.

Apparently the Oilers raised hell with SN and Rogers by not using Jack and our team for our games while everyone else got to keep theirs. I am not sure who Singh replaced but I cannot imagine Jets fans are very happy losing their guys.
Jets are covered by TSN, so Sportsnet doesn't have access to their normal guy (who was Dennis Beyak, but I thought I heard he retired).

I've long argued that he got his results largely by quality of competition, but as the sample size has increased a bit, I'm less inclined to push that excuse.

Vs. Non-Playoff teams he's 17-4 with a 0.900 save percentage and 2.64 GAA
Vs. Playoff teams he's 9-6-1 with a 0.898 save percentage and 2.87 GAA

Whereas Skinner is

Vs Non-Playoff teams he's 14-6-1 with a 0.909 save percentage and 2.51 GAA
VS. Playoff teams teams he's 12-14-3 with an 0.879 and a 3.24 GAA

So Pickards numbers other than wins/losses are pretty consistent vs. either, whereas Skinner's superior vs. lesser teams and totall craters against playoff teams.

Limiting it to top 10 teams which is basically all that's left in the playoffs:

Pickard is 6-4-1 with a 0.894 save percentage and 3.05 GAA
Skinner is 7-10-3 with a 0.875 save percentage and 3.35 GAA

All stats in include playoffs so that may help Pickard's numbers a bit, but so what. We're trying to say who's likely to play better in these playoffs and we could also argue most of Pickard's starts vs. the good teams have come later in the season with less of the key players in front of him.

At this point, Pickard has clearly earned the net.
Appreciate your shift in position. The results really at this point, combined with the players stated belief in Pickard, it seems that Pickard has indeed earned the net.

Of note one of the losses attributed to Pickard was with him relieving Skinner who had a shaky start letting in 3 in first period and getting pulled. 2 other of Pickards losses the Oilers failed to score. Impressive as well that in all Pickards starts he's only been pulled once. Perhaps more reliable than given credit for during the regular season.

Seeing some videos of oilers fans fighting each other during the LA series. Lol what the hell?

Maybe if we win this series. We can not do that and just be friendly to each other.

I have ground rules
Dont take my beer
Don't touch my wife's breasts (unless you ask first)

We get along that simple

I'm not into fads so I must be one of the stupid ones

The guy just gets on my nerves. He reminds me of a quote I heard years ago: "The guy can pack the most words into the smallest thought of anyone I've ever met." He just seems to cycle through the same five catchphrases over and over again, and I honestly can't recall anything he's ever said that taught me something or added in any meaningful way to my viewing experience. People here hated Drew Remenda too, but at least he would insert the occasional insight now and then. With Louie it's just "can opener", "nose for the net", "shooting mentality", "they're taking a good look at this", etc. etc. All game, every game. Strikes me as the kind of guy who's never happier than when he's the one doing the talking.

I don't know, maybe it's just the nature of commentary these days. I long for some far off day when I can just watch the game and not have to listen to any announcers whatsoever. It'll never happen, but a guy can dream.

Oh this is a fair take. No probs if you think he's vanilla.

However, it's been years of seeing ppl in GDTs(and this thread too) claim he roots for the other team. He hates the Oilers blah, blah, blah.

It's utter bs and what he actually says to how it's interpreted is beyond nonsensical .

This is the first time in the McDrai era that the team is going up against a team that has previously beaten them in the playoffs. I'm hoping beyond hope that provides that extra spark that leads to a good start in this series.
This is interesting. Wouldn't have realized this but it is the case. So its the first revenge series for Drai or McD ever. Given divisional and conference formats seems weird its never occurred till now.

The other look is first time they've had to face a team that solved them before.

But we know what McD has already stated and what this club is like so Avenging it is, at least as a mindset.

The long far off day was 2010, around the time that HDTV sets were flying off the shelves and with promises in sporting events there would be different audio options, camera angles etc offered to the consumer. Also of course promises that telecasts would be in HD and then later in 4K. For live telecasts this has never materialized even 15yrs later. Its classic bait and switch. I doubt there was ever intent to deliver on the promises. But it sounded good to say it.

Funny thing now with AI they could probably provide us with digital Dick Irwin and Danny Gallagher and Howie Meeker doing the intermission analysis but careful what i ask for. heh

The biggest problem with Michaels is Debrusk is how dumbed down and cliched everything is. Same catchphrases ad ad nauseum.

With Debrusk particularly it doesn't escape me that him talking about scoring or making good plays etc is really out of his element. Unfortunately even talking about good fighters is out of his element. Really from a first person level he's as dim as he was as a player.

Michaels probably has ADHD, screeches a lot, yells a lot, has a voice like chalkboard scratching etc. I used to welcome that these were done at end of regular season.

To be a bit nit-picky. Pickard was pulled twice. Once vs. Anaheim, and a second time vs. Seattle (which got Rodrigues his first NHL appearance).

On the other hand he also got nicked for more than just the one loss in relief. The Colorado one where he was pulled after one and also the Winnipeg OTL when the spotters pulled Skinner late.

Don't think it changes your point much. Just details.

Thanks. I missed the Rodrigue one. Memory not being what it was.

As far as the loss attribution I was not aware that the OTL was attributed to Pickard. Good catch.

You might also find it fun to see their records vs teams that still remain in the playoffs today.

Pickard is 2-1-1 with a 0.896 save percentage and 2.93 GAA
Skinner is 3-9-2 with a 0.862 save percentage and 3.61 GAA

Granted, Skinner's games vs. Vegas were actually overall decent 1-2-0, 0.924, 2.38 but absolutely atrocious vs. the rest of the remaining teams with only two gamesa being over .900 (the final Winnipeg game where they rested half their lineup and the earlier game vs. Carolina)

From the looks of it was some high school aged teens experiencing copious alcohol consumption and I'm wondering how seriously checked the sales are. Mind you people sure look younger now than they used to so maybe they're all 25 and just look 16. lol

I wasn't abreast of that latter comment until I replied. I'm holding out till the Dallas series and I'd look for tickets behind Dallas bench. I'd ask Mrs Dallas Knockers if its OK and get slapped upside my head by her and my wife. Then I wake up and it was all a dream. life is good anyway

Louie bleeds orange and blue and anyone who thinks otherwise is out of their mind.

It’s funny to compare the comments on this Instagram post to your average HFOil thread. Like I said this morning, the vast majority of Oilers fans love Jack/Louie. We just have a lot of curmudgeons here.

Just because I was curious, and maybe some of yall were too:

Game 6 2023 VGK v EDM
Evander Kane - Connor McDavid - Zach Hyman
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - Leon Draisaitl - Kailer Yamamoto
Warren Foegele - Ryan McLeod - Derek Ryan
Klim Kostin - Nick Bjugstad - Mattias Janmark
Losing McLeod really sucked. He was such a good player with such a great attitude and good speed. Foegele too.
I forgot about Klim, I liked that guy.

At first I thought yes

But I checked with her and she said it's still not ok

So I suppose permission doesn't matter either. Ugh. Women are complicated

The One Rule of Life:

1. It is better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.
2. The less you say the less you have to answer for later.
3. Happy wife, happy life.

You choose the one that best applies to you .
