Pre-Game Talk: Edmonton vs Vegas

Heater? He's got a 0.893 SV% and 13 GA on 11xGA, I don't think that's exactly lighting the world on fire.

Other than maybe that second LA goal last night (which I chalk up to Nurse as much as Picks) I don't think he's given up any howlers, which is all we need from a guy like that.
He’s 4-0 in the playoffs. Outplayed a Vezina candidate. Locked it down every time the chips were all on the table.

Far from Picasso though I agree but still… the man wins hockey games.

Gonna beat Vegas then Colorado then Florida avenging the last three playoff exits to each of the three cup winners

Wierd looking back at it, but I seem to remember Desharnais being terrible in this series vs. Vegas in 2023, but much like we saw last year a big part of the story was Nurse and Ceci being eaten alive.
Desharnais got blamed for what was perceived as some major mistakes in both the Vegas and LA series that year, but it was just him getting stuck out with Nurse after PK shifts. Most of them were just Nurse fumbling around and getting caught with possession, and handing off the puck to Desharnais(usually bad passes made in panic) and hanging him out to dry.

Players move on, but there is one constant with the Oiler's defense in the playoffs over the last 5 years - Nurse is a liability both to his team and whatever defenseman unfortunate enough to be partnered with him.

Outside of the obvious and hoping pickard can continue to make the saves when they matter, we need mcdrai to stay healthy. A hopeful deep run with them both dominating and contributing would be a blessing. Last 2 years draisaitl has been really banged up.

I'm going to be in the minority here, but after playing LA, I think the Kings series will end up being more challenging than the LV series for the Oilers, when all is said and done.

Vegas is a very slow team and has an especially slow defensive lineup. The Oilers have been the fastest team in the playoffs overall and can use that speed to take advantage of Vegas' slow defense, especially guys like McNabb and Hague. They can kill Vegas in transition and generate a lot of offense there. And they're going to need to, because once you set up in Vegas's zone, they just clog up the centre of the ice and block everything that comes within a 20 foot radius of the net.

I remember pretty vividly him f***ing up pretty badly at least twice in Game 1 leading directly to goals on the first shift after a goal for. Seeing the numbers for the rest of the series, I must have blocked him out to not notice that he was basically perfect from there on out. Interesting.

Interesting. Thought I'd look them up on NHL Edge and sure enough, they aren't an overly fast team, but LA wasn't really either, but generally quicker than Vegas.

Doing the Edge comparison between Edmonton. Sure looks like speed is a big swing Edmonton's way, but goals and shooting percentage better with Vegas.

Vegas seems to be good at getting a higher number of shot from inside the circle inside the lane to the net, especially on the left side. We'll need good forward support in the d-zone, particularly from the right wings.

Nurse desperately needs to stop making bad pinches towards the boards and leaving the middle of the ice wide open. It's been a significant factor in multiple of the goals against.

If he can clean that up, I do think it would move the needle. That, and gap control.

My god were those two yesterday leading to breakaways were terrible. I can't imagine what the scribes would be writing about Bouchard if he did the same thing as Nurse did on those 2. The first maybe was a reasonable idea if Drai can get back in time, but then he didn't really do anything after challenging the carrier. The 2nd breakaway was one of the dumbest plays ever. Abandoned 2 players that were behind coverage on a tough play for his partner to complete.

That Broberg penalty in Game 5 that parlayed itself into a 5 on 3 because of a must call high sticking shortly after giving a long 5 on 3 and ultimately a quick 3 goal swing is probably the most frustrating penalty call against an Oiler in the McDrai era. Such a terrible call. Frustration like that may only be matched by the non-call that cut up Ekholm in the third period of Game 6 leaving him look like this.

I don't believe in reffing conspiracies, but f*** is it frustrating when you're on the wrong end of multiple bad calls or non-calls that directly impact the result.
I’m more pissed about Pietrangelo only getting 1 game for the cheap slash on Draisaitl after the empty net goal which essentially took his goal scoring ability away for the rest of the series. Given the magnitude of the slash and the timing of when it happened should have been the end of the playoffs for Pietrangelo.

Yeah. Another such example.

I think this is exactly the series for Perry. Vegas destroys teams that play perimeter hockey. You gotta get inside the fortress they build around their net, and there may be no better guy on the team at doing that than Corey Perry. I am looking forward to seeing him get inside their kitchen and bang around with their defense, maybe draw some timely penalties (lol who am I kidding on that front).
Actually we are set up pretty good for this.
Perry
Hyman
Frederic
Kane
Podkolzin

That's some serious beef and pretty high skill causing havoc and getting up in Hill's grill.

Gap control is a big one, and not just for Nurse. Other than in game 5, the Oilers D were giving LA's forwards far too much space on the rush, including Kempe, who is among the elite of the elite of shooters. I would argue that no one on Vegas can shoot in-stride like Kempe, but they still have guys who become immediate scoring threats the moment the D gives them more than a stick's length of space in the defensive zone. Karlsson, Eichel, Hertl will make Edmonton pay if they're given too much room.

Just looking at Vegas series win vs Minny. Won every game by a goal (excluding one 19:59 ENG) and got the better of Minny on special teams in 3 of those games, and even in 1 (Vegas 1 SHG, Minny 1 PPG in that one).

Overall, Vegas 4 PPG, 2 SHG. Minny 3 PPG.

Minny got the better of them 5v5 in the series. No surprise Vegas got more PP ops, 18 to 13, but there's no excusing Minny going 3GF, 2GA on the PP. Special teams killed them as they lost 4 close games.

I don't worry too much about our PP getting things done, but obviously worry about an imbalance of opportunities. Getting back to our old ways on the PK can be huge in this series.
