One thing that irks me continually is how this org is so awful with cap structure that it seems like every guy they bring in has to have buyback or some other deferred cap or gimmicks just to fit him in. This of course meaning it costs us in other ways to obtain that kind of "desperate" deal. The Oilers lose further prospects that they don't even care about because of how awful cap management is. Of course this being a continual thing.

This team is gonna look full of holes in a few yrs. Won't be any cheap ECLs or prospects to be found here.

Don’t worry. Those prospects would only get 3-5 mins a game anyway :)

We just seem to toss in extra picks and prospects constantly.

Spending a 2nd on a third line pending UFA isn’t buying low.
The injury happened in a game. His bad play is from brain dead decision making.
I think you are way over rating a 2nd round pick. Their chances of even making it to the NHL are very low.

How much have you seen Frederic play?

To be fair, not much. But Boston fans have seem him play plenty and last time we played them they all bitched about how much of an ass he's been and that they couldn't wait to get rid of him.

There's hope he can contribute, so I'll be cheering him on and am excited to see him play. Particularly when there's quite a bit of history of players of this type having productive stretches with McDavid or Draisaitl (looking at guys like Kane, Kassian and Maroon) but I'm not convinced in the slightest that this deal is fair market value.

If that’s the case why not just trade a 2nd for guys one Max Jones?

The point isn’t necessarily what that pick could have become, it’s what that pick could have got us in a player. A 2nd round pick would have been what a guy like Frederic is worth last year. A guy like Frederic now who has been playing awfully this year and is still going to be out at least a few weeks. He has the worst goal differential in the team for forwards.

I have seen him 5/6 times this year. This is a player I loved the last few but his game is all off. Makes dumb decisions with the puck, which leads directly to goals against and shot. He was never great defensively but he also was never actively a detriment like he has been more this year.

Heck don’t believe me, go look at what Boston fans are saying and have said all year. Dudes not good this year and the fact that he is going to have even more limited time to gel with the team makes this feel like the Mike Green trade 2.0

I don't understand the fretting over acquisition cost. He's probably the only guy available that has size/physicality and a scoring touch. It is what it is, and these aren't assets that are meaningfully relevant.

We could have just added a bunch of Max Jone's and hoped for the best, but I'd prefer we pay a little more to get a physical player that actually has a chance to contribute on the scoresheet too.

As always, I think its silly to speculate on "oh they have no assets left they're done now" or "he's injured until playoffs!" until we actually know that either are true. If he's the only guy we get, its a f*** up. Just don't see the value in catastrophizing that now.

Honestly pretty good deal. Both players fill a need, and a 2nd is fair compensation.

Wanner stagnated this year, and he's looking more like Samorukov or Lagesson vs. legit NHL'er. LaChance has the size to be an Maroon type, but his skating is even uglier, nor does he have the same physical play.

Frederic's potentially out until the playoffs, but that means the Oil would still have some cap space.
He's not a lead-the-phyiscal charge type (he hits, but he's not super nasty about it), but he is a good second wave guy. The other big advantage is he a swiss army knife, a bit like Henrique: He can play C/W, up and down the lineup, plus both specialty teams.

Max Jones was a name I tossed out a while back for them to look at. He's far from good, but he can fill that Kostin role of someone who runs around, hits, fights and has the size to back it up.

There was a post on here that indicated not to pay much attention to the Boston mob on HF.
In my experience here that has a ring of truth to it because fans typically have a very short memory.

This player was pretty good the previous couple of years before this season. Down years happen so I am not too concerned with fan opinion.

I like the fact that he plays big and can pot a few goals at 5x5 but I wish I knew more about his skating.

This trade paves the way for a bigger one. We have more cap space than before.

The one exception is if this is to make room for Kane's early return, but I doubt it. Expect a bigger cap player coming before the deadline

The entire bruins lineup has been off this season. Every single Boston fan I know adores him.

Mike Green wasn’t an NHL player when we grabbed him. What an insane comparison.

All good points. But it ignores that he has not been a good player this year. Hes tied with Zadorov in points, he has the worst goal differential for the forwards on the Bruins while not seeing tough minutes.
Right now he is a hard hitting tough guy who has been a defensive liability and is currently injured. Could he completely flip and be the player he was last year? Possibly.
Is it a risk that could bite us. Also yes.

Pretty simple...because Max Jones inst as good a player as Frederic.

So you are suggesting that Frederics down year this season defines the player more than the multiple good years prior to this season?
I dont agree with that at all.

Giving up on a player that hs a history of being a good player just because he is having an off year is an example of a team not getting enough value for said player.
That IMO is what the Bruins did here.

The general rule for the odds of a player being a good version of themselves is that if you need them more, they will look better. Frederic is younger, bigger and more physical than our bottom sixers. The odds are high that he looks good here.

I think Jones is a decent Plan B for a physical forward whom you don't mind fighting, if Kane isn't good to go for the playoffs. If they play LA again, he's the guy taking Jeanot off the the ice for 5 min vs. letting him run around or having Nurse to it.
