take the best guy available, and hope for the best, it also allows extra time for prospects to develop and, at the very least, maybe gain some trade value.

i hate the rule though, it's a loophole that rarely works in the favour of Canadian teams. Sure we got Justin Schultz through it, but we lost Marino. Calgary lost Adam Fox, which is way worse. I hope they get rid of that rule in the next CBA.
You don't get their full value though when teams know they don't want to sign. Oil need to stay away from NCAA for draft

paying a 2nd and a couple of long-shot prospects is now paying a "premium" lol
Itvis really funny that you think Oilers amateur scouting is better than New Jerseys

That's the risk you run.

For whatever reason Holland and Wright were obsessed with the NCAA and avoided the CHL like the plague.
Why take that risk? Can you tell me one good player Oilers drafted out if NCAA and were able to sign?

Holloway.

I think you take the best player available always. Even kids who want to stay in the USA have value, more than a lesser prospect you can keep.

I kinda dislike this trade.

Our bottom 6 could benefit a grinding big physical fast RH centre. Frederic is a physical LH winger. If all were getting is physical and intangible, why not just spend the same amount and use NJ to launder Brandon Tanev for ~200k more? Or, for that matter, send some of the relentless dead cap to a third team and pick up a physical RH centre in Gourde?

Realistically, this is a sprinkle-around-the-edges move. With the glaring holes that remain on this roster (2RD, 1G), and considering our ace-in-the-hole move is purportedly bringing in  another LH physical winger in Kane, spending our best cap free asset on Frederic is baffling.

Add to that his mysterinjury status and how he might not play until the playoffs (EITHER)... woof. This team needs a f**king colonic.

Our bottom six is old slow and soft as mush. Trent hits, has movement away from the puck, can PK well cause he is pretty fast, has some offense. Good thing Janmark can play RW. He will allow some versatility with Kaner's usage.
We were unlikely to get both a 2RD and a 1G anyways. More likely to get a 3LD and a 1B or 2G if we get goaltending at all.

There's a few with varying degrees of good. Holloway, Kesselring, Desharnais, Kemp, etc.

I don't really think it is worth the risk. They're tougher to sign and you usually end up with less RFA years on them. Unfortunately Tyler Wright aka the worst hire in Oilers history thought otherwise.

Which will allow Nuge to continue to lolly-gag his way through the season.
Of all the players on the ice last night, RNH was most disappointing. And that’s saying something because they all were disappointing. Couldn’t even be bothered to play his position properly, support them defensively or with any energy. Veteran players like him shouldn’t be in that type of conversation.

Again, part of the team’s leadership problem. I mean, what coach would ever say, follow RNHs lead. He will lead you to success.

Dustin Schwartz, Bob Nicholson, Pete Chiarelli, Dallas Eakins, George Burnett, Steve Tambellini all say “Tyler, hold my beer”.

Gourde is tiny. He’s like 5’9” 174 lbs. Tanev is also smaller, slower and also shoots left. Neither guy is close to the physical presence Frederic is.

Prioritizing handedness in forwards is pretty pointless.

The Oilers already have a couple lefties that are better at faceoffs on their offhands than 95% of righties in the league.

Maybe cause I am older--I lay the blame on the Arnott situation to certain media people not liking him and writing hit pieces on him. His ex-girlfriend had a kid and one of the "beat" writers called him the poster child for unplanned fatherhood or something
I was young but I remember that. Absolute smear job by the sports media in this city. Embarrassing at the time and even worse in hindsight. Unprofessional clownshow.

Im sure we could both find deals that are better and worse throughout the years.
So what?
Different seasons create different circumstances.

The reality with this season is that its a sellers market. In a sellers market the prices will be higher.
That said I think there is a significant amount of overvaluing (by some posters) regarding the pieces that went out the door.
Which assets are overvalued? The top 50 pick or Lachance?

Dustin Schwartz, Bob Nicholson, Pete Chiarelli, Dallas Eakins, George Burnett, Steve Tambellini all say “Tyler, hold my beer”.
At least most of those guys had some glimmer of success somewhere.

Wright was pretty much the worst head scout in NHL history for Detroit and Kenny couldn't help himself from giving him another job.

Holloway.

Sorry I meant American kid out of the NCAA. That is the issue. It is the American kids that dont want to stay and we have had ZERO success and to continue to do that is teh definition of futile.

I am comfortable with the reports that Lachance wasnt signing with Edmonton so that leaves the 2nd round pick.
So we are basically talking about a pick that has approx a 20% chance of even making it to the NHL. The chances that pick becomes an NHL regular is less.

This is a late 2nd round pick as well so somewhere between 17.2% and 13.7% is more realistic.
Thats what the Oilers gave up for Frederic. I dont have an issue with that only because the team is in win now mode and a player like Frederic is something this team needs.
