The Oilers only agree to acquire Flip if the add-on is so great it overcomes a) his contract b) his NMC and the mandatory protection required thereafter. Sustr certainly doesn't do it, and not with Edmonton including Maroon of all players.

The template of any Filppula deal will be something like Valteri + TB 1st/top prospect for a lesser prospect/pick. That's the only way it happens.

My initial thought was always "Filppula to EDM", and so my hope was to use this thread to try and come up with a suitable return - I appreciate all of the feedback. I underestimated Maroon's worth to EDM (sorry to hear that he got injured this week).

As is often the case on HFB, I also think people are making too much out of the NMC in regards to expansion. I have a feeling that teams are going to be asking players to waive these left and right in advance of the draft, with the threat of a buyout in the aftermath. I get the feeling that if Filppula doesn't waive his NMC before the draft, he's going to get bought out. George McPhee has already said that Las Vegas will NOT be a "dumping ground" for bad contracts, so I doubt he selects any players like Filppula, Clarkson, Girardi, etc. Asking these players to waive their NMC would just be a formality.

And I can understand those people who say that Filppula would only waive his NMC to go to a contender, but didn't Lucic specifically sign in Edmonton because of McD and the new arena? I was in Edmonton a few years ago (loved it), and I'm going back in April to see the new building. Wouldn't more players want to be on board? :dunno:

I wouldn't give a top prospect just to be rid of Filppula, but I would give a 1st. Our window is open now, and while our top prospects will be needed to replace the players we're forced to lose to the cap/expansion, a (most likely) late first round pick wouldn't help us for at least a couple of years. To me that's not too high a price to pay for getting Filppula off the books entirely. By not having to buy him out it then becomes practical for us to buy Callahan out, and the combined savings could potentially allow us to keep almost our entire core intact.

A player like Filppula does not have much to fear from a buyout. He will get $3.33M just for breathing. And he will be a free agent. So all he has to do is sign for $1.6M and he makes his money back but gets to choose more ore less where he wants to play.

I don't see us giving up Sustr to unload cap space. While he's looking like he'll be unexposed in the expansion draft, he's an important piece on this year's team.

At risking of pissing off my fellow TB fans, what would Edmonton give up for Brian Boyle? Great 4C with strong leadership abilities.
