FIVE KEYS TO THE GAME

1. Checking Connor
Connor McDavid has 15 points in nine career games against the Leafs including five goals and 10 assists. Watching him pick up steam through the neutral zone frightens any NHL opponent, and the Leafs don’t need a reminder. “Full team effort,” Travis Dermott said. “If he is skating from their end with speed, we will rely on our forwards to try to get in his way at least a little bit.”

2. Not mighty Mikko
Oilers goalie Mikko Koskinen is 0-3 against the Leafs in his career with a .836 save percentage, giving up 11 goals at even-strength, and he’s off to a dicey start. If the Leafs get the kind of pressure they did against Winnipeg on Monday, this could be decided early.

3. Barrie is back
Had Tyson Barrie enjoyed something approaching a good season with the Leafs, Kyle Dubas might have checked under the couch cushions to find money to re-sign him. We’ll be curious to see if the Leafs can exploit the defensive deficiencies of Barrie.

4. Balancing act
While the Leafs would like to get scoring from all four lines, the top six has paced the club with 24 points in total through four games. Despite the offensive gifts the Oilers have, Edmonton has just 10 goals in four games, with none from Leon Draisaitl, the 2019-20 Hart Trophy winner.

5. Win the draw
Small sample size, sure, but the Leafs had an NHL-best 58.7% success rate in the face-off circle before games on Tuesday, though the Oilers weren’t far off at 53.4%. Winning draws has helped the Leafs to 58.2% in possession at five-on-five, also tops in the NHL through the early going.

I was blessed with an idyllic snowfall this morning while playing on the outdoor rink - it's a sign from the hockey gods that tonight's going to be a Maple Leafs' victory!

McJesus will come out flying for family/friends so we need to play solid D for 1st period and then we should blow them out ... Oilers have zero defense and a below average NHL goalie ... a patient 1st is da key as we don't want to exchange chances with McJesus in 1st ... stick Zach and Muzzy on him every shift and it should help

But.....there are no family and friends.....

Somehow Montreal was able to shut him and Drai out. Can our Leafs do that?

I really hope we find a way to contain McJesus. He will always find the scoresheet at some point, but we have to play this guy 9 times this year. In my mind, if we hold Conner to under a pt/gm in those 9 games, we have a VERY good chance of winning the majority of those 9. The data is there, when conner goes the oilers go. This will not be easy though. He is the most dynamic player in NHL history in my mind. I really don't know how you stop a plyer like that. But if we can minimize the damage he does, we will have a very good chance at winning. I am not too sure I have ever thought the game plan should revolve around 1 player, but this guy can win games on his own. Truly special. I remember Naz used to up his game when playing conner, Really would like to see some of that from our 3rd line. Im not sure anyone on the leafs, or the NHL for that matter can skate stride for stride with conner, but our 3rd line has great speed. I think the 3 can really make it tough for him if they put their minds to it.

Habs made sure one of their top 2 D pairs were on ice and rotated forwards as usual when McJesus was on ice ... we don't have 2 pairs of defensive minded defenders so we have to employ a different strategy but we should be fine even if Rielly and Brodie are on ice ... that's why I think Oiler will still score 3 because it will be tough to get Muzzy out there for every shift

Be interesting to see who Keefe matches up with McDavid
I think its clear that matthews is going up against every top line this year. Kerfoot is getting 2nd line and then tavares is feasting on the third line

For D pairs, I think rielly and brodie since they can skate but I wouldnt be shocked at muzzin and holl.

I watched those games and it had more to do with Edmonton being so bad than it did with Montreal shutting them down defensively. They looked clueless and just uninterested in playing aside from maybe Koskinen
Habs tossed Drai around like a baby and he is a big man .. Habs gave McJesus outside lanes and let him skate around like crazy ... but did not give him middle of ice anytime ... they can do it because they play a strong defensive game and their men are massive

It'll be a tough task to shut down mcdavid. I honestly doubt we completely shut him down, he always does well against us. The ideal gameplan is to overwhelm their defence and box out all secondary scoring for the oil. Hopefully pull away with a 4-2 win, mcdavid being in on both oil goals. Though, Edmonton is due for a big game... really hope it's not this one.

Being a fan of both teams I think neither fan should be tossing rocks at glasshouses. Sure looks like the leaves and oilers are tearing up the league
