Kurri's argument is that he played longer. But Coffey's peak with the Oilers was incredible. They nearly had the same PPG and :

Coffey in 6 seasons :

Norris finishes : 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 5
Hart finishes : 4, 10, 15

Kurri in 10 seasons :

Selke finishes : 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 10
Hart finishes : 14
Kurri also would have won the Rocket or placed top 3 in many of those seasons. He scored at 51g / 82gp pace.

I think it's debateable. I think length of the career with the team is relevant.

Yes, length of the career with the team is absolutely relevant, which is why I mentioned it in my 1st sentence.

And yes, Kurri was a prolific scorer, that was never denied. It helps that he played on Gretzky's wing in the highest scoring era. Not saying it didn't also help Coffey

But I can give you that's it's debatable as we just did

... Wait, someone DIDN'T vote for Gretzky?

Well one poster who didn’t has Flames in their name and voted for Lowe, Weight, Anderson and Coffey, so make of that what you will. I’m assuming the others are similar

I had Gretzky, Messier, Coffey and McDavid.

Gretzky and Messier were no brainers, IMO. McDavid's stat line says that he belongs up there even without having yet won a Cup.

I was debating between Smythe and Coffey, but in the end, Coffey won out because of how dominant he was during those Cup winning seasons.

Early 2000s Oiler fan vote -

Gretzky
Messier
McDavid
Smyth

in reality Kurri or Coffey should have Smyths spot

It would be very hard for me to see Smyth over either Coffey or Kurri. Honestly, the next guy in line for me after McDavid if you wanted a post Gretzky Era player would be Leon. Smyth was a heart and soul kind of guy but he was never as impactful as any of these others unless you place huge weight on longevity with the team. Leon has matched Smyth's Oiler production in 400+ fewer games.

For me the 4th choice came down to Coffey, Kurri or Leon. I chose Coffey but if you ask me this question 5 years from now, I am pretty sure the answer would be Leon.

Sure it does. McDavid has had an immense impact on the franchise. Second only to Gretzky in my mind.
What do you value more though? The guys who helped win multiple championships and created one of the greatest dynasties in history, or a guy who won a few scoring titles? It’s not like guys like Kurri and Coffey were passengers either. Hall of Famers with plenty of records for them too. This doesn’t need to be a “who’s the best player” conversation.

I first started going to Oiler games in 72. I was also a season ticket holder with the Oilers through the 80s and I saw all of their home ice playoff wins so I can certainly appreciate the old guys. I had three of the dynasty players on my list...Gretzky, Messier and Coffey. But McDavid has had an immense impact on the franchise that was in complete disarray before he came.

Winning is a team effort. McDavid's performance in last year's playoffs equaled anything I have seen from an Oiler in the playoffs not named Gretzky. The fact that the team did not beat Colorado was not on him. Ultimately, McDavid is not only the second-best player to play for the team, but I would argue easily the second most consequential for the franchise.

At the end of the day, this is a question best answered by Oilers fans (similar to a statue) since nuance plays a role here, so obviously your opinion is more important. I’m just speaking from an outsiders perspective.

McDavid isn’t even close to being on it right now.

Gretzky
Messier
Coffey
Kurri

Fuhr would be next, then McDavid.

The fact I'm an Oiler fan and understand the sentiment of the fanbase better than you? What's yours based on?
I’m also an Oilers fan. They are my 2nd favourite team and have been my whole life. I’ve lived in Edmonton. Tell me more…

Being the 5th or whatever best player on a dynasty is not more impressive than being the best player in the world for half a decade.

I’d agree if he had already led his team to a Cup. But as it stands right now:

No Cups, no Conn Smythe, and he’s behind all of them in playoff games played, points, goals, and assists. Not even a finals appearance.

He isn’t close right now.

I wonder how many playoff games McDavid would have if he was somehow the 5th best player in his team.
