Man it's crazy that more teams don't just draft the best players of all time, literally just draft McDavid/Gretzky you idiots.
Gretzky wasn't drafted, he was won during a game of backgammon from the owner of the Indianapolis Racers. He actually scored his first and second pro goals against the Oilers in 1978.

I think a huge part of the success of the edmonton oilers franchise is the fans, recent polls have found that oilers fans are both the wealthiest and most attractive in the league, which helps propel the franchises worth.
It’s truly a blessing and a curse . Never easy being so ridiculously good looking but we just carry on, one day at a time.

Honestly, I do think the NHLPA has quite a bit to do with this increase in revenue.

When the cap was flat due to COVID and all the players were paying a huge escrow due to Hockey Related Revenue being down Friedman mentioned on the 32 thoughts podcast that the NHLPA asked the NHL to step up their efforts on increasing the overall revenue of the sport. Basically asking the NHL are you doing everything you can to maximize revenue.

Basically this is where the sponsorships on the helmets and eventually the jersey came from but that probably is peanuts compared to making fans pay the actual fair market value a ticket is actually worth. All of a sudden playoff tickets were being priced as much as a scalper would pay.

You used to be on a waiting list for 10+ years to get season tickets for the Oilers, now that waitlist is basically gone. It is just too much money to spend year in / year out. They had an insane sellout streak when the Oilers were going through their decade of darkness when it was still expensive but relatively cheap compared to today's price. Now it is not uncommon to find empty seats when you go to the games.

They find the max that someone is willing to pay and they basically sell at that price.

It's just too bad that Katz is still the owner. Nice to see the franchise healthy, just wish they had an owner a little easier to like.

Grats to the billionaire owner I guess that swindled the town into paying for his arena....and then right away saw the value of his company sky rocket lmao. Only one winner there and it is the Katz family.
Do you have the same energy towards the flames and there billionaire owner edwards??? They actuality got more tax payers money including provincial funding. Something edmonton did not 🤷‍♂️

I don't believe that story for a second.

IMO Gretzky signed those shady 20 year "personal services" contracts in order to avoid the NHL draft, and the prospect of being stuck on a bottom-feeding "Mickey Mouse" franchise.

I think Walter Gretzky has more in common with Bonnie & Carl Lindros than most people give him credit for... just way more discreet about it.

CoE is paying $1.5 million annually to maintain the old Northlands Coliseum (for heating, security, and general maintenance), but it should be demolished soon.

It could have been repurposed for something else but our city caved so badly when the slimy owner demanded that “Rogers Place” be the only venue in the city.

I know Northlands Coliseum needed to be replaced but there’s nothing about Rogers Place that separates it from any other newer cookie-cutter arena. At least NC was purely for hockey, the atmosphere in the new arena isn’t the same (ie: as deafening come playoff time).

At the same time it’s awesome to see the only more valuable franchises than the Oilers are the Leafs, Rangers, Habs, Blackhawks, and Kings. Really shows how much Edmonton punches above its weight.

No way! He got the taxpayers to pay for his venue AND also got an exclusivity guarantee?

Viva la democracy?

sure ok, thats a very simplistic way of looking at it....but the arena district spurred a revitalization of Edmonton's downtown. As someone who has worked downtown for a decade...the city has got a lot more back than its put in imo.

This is so disingenuous. OP mentioned they sold out their arenas during decade of darkness and that is without massive corporate sponsorships like Toronto and Vancouver. I’ve been to games at all 3 places and it’s hilarious to see the difference between actual fans and people who just got free tickets from their rich friends.

Certainly Edmonton is one of the best NHL cities, if not the best when you factor in fandom as a percentage of city residents (Cdn. NHL cities will be the top 7), passion of fanbase, revenue per capita, etc.

And to the fools saying this is because of 4 first-overall draft picks. Uh... no. Actually, Edmonton has been one of the best hockey cities in the world since the 1940s. (Also, I don't think Nail Yakupov and Taylor Hall are currently driving ticket sales.)
It's hard to take Staples seriously about anything; I'm surprised he didn't blame wokeness as to why their revenue wasn't even higher.
I enjoy Staples' banter on The Cult of Hockey and he seems like a good guy, as far as hockey goes. But, yeah, he's a fairly typical white-male of his generation, in terms of living in the dark in terms of discriminatory and equity issues. He wrote a column piece a few weeks ago arguing that the most discriminated people at The University of Alberta were white males. He's basically Jordan Peterson if he had a byline. (On which point, Staples' articles are incredibly poorly written , with grammar and spelling errors.)

you clearly can not recognize a PR puff piece when you see . Lets see where we are in 5 to 6 years when McDavid and Leon are on their last legs and the Oilers are a top of players no trade lists. I took in a game at their new arena. The prices are insane across the board. Like with all teams, lets see how well off they are when they sucking wind in the bottom of the league.
I thought this was worth sharing. A financial success story of a small market team. The Oilers were the highest revenue team in the NHL in 2023/24… astounding, when considering their competitors and currency differential.

I know some will point out to the lottery wins, which undoubtedly helped them get to where they are today but I think it speaks more to the loyalty of the die hard hockey fans of Northern Alberta. Let’s not forget they were selling out the old barn during the decade of darkness.

All of that said. I wish there was more balance with Katz overcharging in many areas… almost all… but I guess that’s business… “if they will pay it, we will charge it”.

...Montreal seems like they're still prospering and we've SUCKED for three straight years...Toronto went a decade making the Playoffs once, still seemed to be getting along OK money-wise...the Oil were already HORRIBLE for a decade and still made ends meet rather easily...you hate them, we get it...

Didn't the arena district he promised not even end up getting completed? It really isn't a simplistic view point lol your city handed over a whole ass arena to Katz. I fundamentally disagree with that. You aren't the only city to have done something like this so I'm not picking on Edmonton or something lol. Not sure why so many people feel the need to go to battle for their billionaire owner....they do not know who you are. They do not care about you.

Yes.

relatively new arena and 2 of the top players in the world. When you win the fans turn out. But when the team starts to lose? Ask the Blackhawks fans. At least the Hawks won some cups before the dip. Oilers have the oldest team in the league and the duo are starting nudge towards 30. They have do not have any real legit prospects coming up, so they need rely on UFA and cast offs. And that is before we talk about their goalies. Until the oilers get a goalie? There is a massive cliff coming up

And to the fools saying this is because of 4 first-overall draft picks. Uh... no.

It's because of one first overall draft pick. The 4th one the Oilers made in a 5 year span because they were such a poorly run joke of a franchise. You know it, I know it, everybody knows it.

No disrespect to the Oil faithful because they do truly show out for their hockey club to an almost cultish degree but I'm not about to give credit to the jokers in their front office for some master plan that's coming together to make Katz a bunch of money. They were one lottery ball away from being just like any other irrelevant small market pro sports team.

As a “fluff piece”, you’ll have to point out the exaggerations&/or inaccurate content.

It’s almost like you’re suggesting the Oilers have been a perennial playoff team for the past quarter century, rather than a team who missed the playoffs for 14 out of 17 year span during that last quarter century.

… oh, and they nearly sold out every game during that decade of darkness when they missed the playoffs for 10 straight seasons.

You clearly can not recognize a hockey crazed market who are loyal fans.
