I thought this was worth sharing. A financial success story of a small market team. The Oilers were the highest revenue team in the NHL in 2023/24… astounding, when considering their competitors and currency differential.

I know some will point out to the lottery wins, which undoubtedly helped them get to where they are today but I think it speaks more to the loyalty of the die hard hockey fans of Northern Alberta. Let’s not forget they were selling out the old barn during the decade of darkness.

All of that said. I wish there was more balance with Katz overcharging in many areas… almost all… but I guess that’s business… “if they will pay it, we will charge it”.

I still have a few of those stored somewhere. A cool keepsake for sure.

I still remember the dreaded countdown to the deadline for a local group to buy the team before it was relocated to Houston. Every day the news had an update on the goings on and how many days were left, and as an 8 year old that deeply loved the team and didn't have any grasp of the intricacies of what had to happen to keep the team here it seemed simply like it was a daily count down to when we would lose them.

On the final day I remember being picked up from school and was certain they were gone. I got in the car and my mom just said something like "someone from Edmonton bought the Oilers and they're staying." I could not have been happier, was like Christmas. I spent the whole day at school dragging my ass around depressed because I thought they would be history that night.

As a fan of Calgary, I am impressed and happy hockey in Edmonton is thriving, even if profit is going into billionaire's pockets.

May the Battle of Alberta stay gold forever.

Happy Edmonton managed to keep the Oilers, and is a successful business.

The article mentions that Oilers revenue was tops due to playoff success. Going to the Finals means that the revenue number is the peak to be expected. What's the bottom (no playoffs)? Would it be half (same as Calgary last year mentioned in the article)?

it's ok to hate your favourite team's owner, and also every billionaire. they are not your friend and would not think twice about clearing out your bank account if they could.
 
I seem to remember 2014-15 sesson, fans were starting to have enough and given up on the “we have a good future” in the Hall/Ebs/Nuge/Yak era hype and you could buy a ticket for 10 dollars on StubHub.

Mcdavid came and all hope was restored but fans started giving up again in 2019. They still are dedicated and been through a lot but I wonder what state they’d be in if they didn’t get that draft lottery luck in 2015. Kevin Lowe could have literally almost killed that franchise.

The fact that the Oilers are still around, viable moving forward, and have a state of the art facility that helps attracts players, is kinda ok for the fans too, ya know...
