Two 50-60 point players on their own with hot starts that might have their best year because they play with McD and Drai. They are both solid pieces that add depth and can take advantage of playing with elite players, but its definetely McD and Drai that carries the lines. Ovi can still at 36 carry a team on his back and will probably do it until the end of his contract. I doubt either of Hyman and RNH will play hockey near the level Ovi does the next 4 years.

Still they might be just as good for Edmonton as having Ovi as they add depth and they dont need to carry the line and can just live on the superior players they play with. On Washington they would have to do way more on their own even tough Washington has talented off players in Backstrom, Oshie, Kuznetsov etc. They are not McD or Drai. Washington would definetely be a worse team.

This greatly weakens the Oilers' depth and Hyman + Nuge on their contracts are worth more than Ovi considering his age (even despite his red hot start). Plus it'd be an atrocious look for both franchises to deal their players who they just signed to extensions this past summer.

Caps say no as well for legacy reasons. Even if they're winning from a vacuum value standpoint, Ovi is retiring a capital and will chase the goal record there. And it's not like this move turns them into a cup front runner. Just doesn't make sense for either side.
