This is all under the assumption SJ isn’t really in the playoff hunt or solidified by the deadline. Big assumption cause they’re playing alright, but hypothetically if they start to tank:

To EDM
Kane at 50%, 3.5 million
Reimer at 2.25 million

To SJ
Koskinen at 4.5 million
Yamamoto at 1.175 million

why EDM does this: essentially a cap neutral move for this year, so also allows you to pick up some other trade deadline acquisitions to really make a run for it. Improved winger depth of Kane over Yamamoto with secondary scoring option. Now obviously this is all about how much you want to risk to win the cup, but even if Kane does horribly and becomes a problem, a buried contract or buyout wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. Secondly, Reimer is playing extremely well this season. You remove Koskinen from the equation and cheap, effective goaltending for this year and next with Smith/Reimer. Again at a cap neutral perspective for this season.

why SJ does this:
Enters rebuild mode. Sells high on Reimer, as his awesome season is just going to be wasted without making the playoffs and unless something changes they’re not making a cup run next year either. Removes Kane relatively painlessly and gets a young winger back, and the team could use more of them.

Oiler fans may not like this, but I think they absolutely should do this deal if it was offered

We would have to think about it. The fact Reimer is signed for next year helps.

But does San Jose do it and does Kosk waive his NTC? If Kane can show in his conditioning period he is still game, I think san jose could get more.

On Paper--oilers win this in a walk

There’s also NTC issues with Kane and Reimer.

Oilers win this deal but I don't like getting a goalie signed for another year. Reimer is so very "meh". Just as "meh" as what we have now, and I don't want another year of "meh" goaltending.

The off ice issues for Kane are still the elephant in the room of course.

Not saying he is going to keep it up, but Reimer and his .936 save % is a big reason why San Jose is even in a playoff hunt right now.

If Edmonton got the same Reimer for the rest of the season and playoffs, I think they would be quite happy.

With how Reimer left Toronto, I can at least think it’s believable that he’d have Edmonton on his no trade list. It’s also hard to expect an easy transition from San Jose to Edmonton as a goalie. The challenges are different and the pressure is ramped up in Canada compared to here.

Does Kane waive for Edmonton?
I mean I think he should as it would not only allow him a path back into the NHL, but one where he gets to play on one of the more high octane offenses. That said maybe he is just fine in San Jose playing for the Barricuda and making bank. His lifestyle seems important to him

Their season would probably go down in flames (no pun intended), if the Kane situation blows up (which it probably will at this point).

He should waive anywhere to play again, especially on a good team like Edmonton

I wouldn't think Kosk would consider waiving unless he's faced with the possibility of heading to the AHL, Kane is a headcase but extremely talented Reimer is a clear upgrade in net as well

I’d do it. Kane would add massive depth scoring on the 3rd line. Something we’ve lacked forever.

And Sharks are getting rid of their biggest problem, and getting a reclamation project of sorts. Need some skill in this lineup cause we are bereft

I like this trade for both sides, San Jose gets rid of Kane while adding a young winger that still has a lot of potential and the goalie contracts work out pretty nicely as well SJ gets a goalie that's gone at the end of the year while Edmonton gets an extra year with Reimer.

Only a sucker would expect for that to happen
