Seems the Oilers don't have much faith in Bouchard and with his skating I wouldn't either.
He's only played 21 games. Relax. He's gonna play 3rd pair for a year.

Our main issue with Barrie is he would take away from developing Bouchard on the PP.

Bouch is a positionally better player than Barrie, but neither are great skaters.

No matter the contract idiots are going to be clamoring to call it an overpayment. If it’s under 6.5 (on a 3 year deal) that’s a great move, as someone who watched him essentially his entire career.

Yes Barrie is 1 dimensional but he is truly elite at that dimension. If he was good defensively and lead all defensemen in points he’d be signing a contract bigger than Seth Jones.

Hopefully the Oilers make 1 more move on defense so they can shelter Barrie

Since when is Hughes a defensive defenceman?
He’s not. If you’d like me to reword the statement- among all defensemen he is one of the worst at playing defense.

The guy I was quoting is acting like Bouchard is going to be a tire fire defensively, which seems hypocritical since he’s a massive Hughes homer

He’s not. But he does play defense…poorly.

No arguing that, but we don't need him to be a stay at home defender, we need him to flourish offensively. He needs a steady rock beside him, Hughes does exactly what we need him to do and he does it well

Barf.

Nurse - Barrie
Keith - Bouchard
Lagesson/Russell/Samurokov/other new shut down vet - Bear
If the Ceci report is true I don’t see a scenario where Bear isn’t dealt. Maybe he could fetch a 3C since he is a young RHD who has played in a top 4 role the past 2 years (albeit quite poorly this past season)

Hughes has excellent skating and was arguably the worst defensive defenseman in the entire NHL this past year without Tanev to carry him yet you have a ton of faith in him…

Let's stay on topic please! Were talking about the Oilers bringing back Barrie because they don't feel Bouchard is ready for that role. I agree and if I'm Holland I'd sell high before he's on waivers in a few years!

I don’t disagree.

Barrie does the same for Colorado/Edmonton (not so much Toronto lol)
Edmonton is realistically the perfect storm for Barrie. It's just unfortunate they don't have the other pieces to cover his deficiencies(Much like Vancouver).

You have 0 clue what you’re talking about. Just because they don’t think a rookie is ready to be on the top pair means he’s going to be on waivers in 2-3 years?

Come on.

You do realize for basically the first 19 games Quinn had Hamonic who hadn't played in a year followed by Benn after Hamonic got hurt in game 4 I believe.
The rest of the season he split time between Hamonic and Myers to a lesser degree, a month-long covid break and still ended up only a minus 2 compared to minus 22 the first 19 games. He's also 21 and is already better offensively than Barrie was at that age.
We don't expect Quinn to be a Slavin out there but a guy who can be a ppg while being even average with the right partner is pretty special.

So what is Edmonton's RD depth next year? Barrie on the top pair, Bear on the 2nd pair and Ceci on the 3rd pair?

Barrie is a good fit for us and seemed to play pretty well with Nurse.

Nurse definitely carries that pairing though.

I’d look at packaging Bear + 1st for another RHD if one is available on the market. If we sign Barrie, then Ceci is probably out.

The Oilers are honestly probably the best fit for Barrie and he’s reportedly well liked in the room.
