Rasmus Andersson 28, RHD $4.25M AAV X 2 Years then UFA, or $2.125M @50% retained

:flames

2026 Oilers 1st round pick
2027 Oilers 1st round pick
Sam O'Reilly or Matthew Savoie, Calgary's choice
Derek Ryan, C, $900,000 AAV X1

Okay Oiler fans, don't freak. Edmonton is effectively giving up three 1sts but Rasmus is a legit top pairing RHD and it's our provincial rival. It would cost premium to get him. Rasmus is exactly what this team needs on the back end. Probably an overpay but if we want the cup it will take a futures heavy package like this to get it. Plus retention to make the cap work.

This gives the Oilers a two year window to go for it. No extension is pre-negotiated in this trade scenario. If they fail to get it done it wouldn't be for lack of trying.

Derek Ryan is there for cap purposes and as a former Calgary Flame they'd probably welcome him back in a limited role.

Calgary gets the Oilers best picks moving forward and can rub it in their faces when and if they pan out. The Oilers don't draft in the first round again until 2028. The Flames effectively choke the development pipeline of their rivals for a few years.

Edmonton had better get really good at drafting NHL level players in the later rounds really quick.

That's way too much, as good as Anderson is. I don't think Calgary gets more than the equivalent of 2 first rounds picks should they decide to trade him. 3 firsts is crazy.

I know, I posted this mainly because it's a provincial rival.

Also, *IF* the Oilers win one of those picks becomes #32 which really isn't that bad to give up. Win the Cup twice and it's twice as easy to stomach.

In other words, I am counting on those being late firsts. The problem arises when they aren't.

I think I'd do it personally, maybe a 2nd or 3rd coming back from Calgary to even the value a bit. Value wise the Oilers are giving up a lot more than they gave up for Ekholm, who is a comparable Dman to Andersson and they got him for 3.25 seasons instead of 1.25 seasons. But given his cap hit at 50% retained while Ekholm only had minor retention it adds value to Andersson.

I do agree that Andersson would probably be the perfect fit and the fact he has a 2nd year on his deal imo makes it worth overpaying.

When Anderson get that much value?

Names!!! lol Give me names. Or better yet, create a thread :)
No one thought Ekholm was available and he's better than Anderson and went for a guy who should have been drafted in the second round and a 1st. He also has more term on his contract at the time of the trade and Nashville took back a cap dump in Barrie.

Rasmus Andersson is not worth this.

Frankly, of the big 4 dmen Calgary had (Tanev, Hanifin, Weegar, Andersson) he's the worst one.
Shows how little you know about the Flames. Plus RH shot defenders who play PP and PK have quite a premium on them. Ras should not be traded to Edmonton or Toronto (they don’t have the assets to get him anyway). And there will be plenty of suitors.

If Edmonton was willing to put 3 1sts on the table to upgrade their D it would have looked more like:

Nurse + 3 1sts for future considerations in the offseason

Brett Pesce+ whatever other dman you wanted.

also would have kept Broberg and not had to dump Ceci

Kulak-Pesce (8.5 mill)
Broberg-Ceci (5.5 mill)

vs

Nurse-Andersson (12 mill)
Kulak-Dermott (3.5 mill)

AND you'd have saved 1.5 mill on the cap. I know which group I'd rather have

No it’s definitely not. Especially trading him to our rival and it would be a sin to help Edmonton win the cup.
Calgary is hardly a rival to the Oilers these days. I get it if they are both playoffs contenders and fighting for the same goals. But neither teams are in the way of one another.

Craig will probably trade him to the Avs or the Jets just like he traded Zadorov and Tanev to our rivals last years because lil bro doesn't want to help us win even if we have the best offer and the Flames are unlikely to be competitive during the McDrai window anyways - classic Shelbyville behaviour

Rasmus is a great d-man but I don't think there is a deal here that can really work for both teams given all the context

Uh, Nurse waives? Why?

Three firsts for... futures?

My top oiler targets would be Brogen, Murphy and Jokiharu

Well... those are names alrighty.

Seemed pretty unanimous that he was the best one. Fell off last year due to being hit by a damn car but otherwise he was always my pick. Maybe Weegar snuck ahead of him to some people.

Hanifin was usually third. Tanev almost always 4th. Just no offense

it’s really not. It’s nowhere near the value.

What do you think the trade should be for? Serious question.

It's hard to come up with trade proposals. Got to give to get. Sometimes it's too much, sometimes not enough.

In this case Andersson isn't a pure rental and is with 50% retention and is from our Provincial rival. So I posted a pretty heavy offer.
