Series Talk: ECSFs Discussion - All The Smoke Edition - Panthers Tied 3-3

That first Tampa series was fun and exciting for any hockey fan. The first game was one of the best playoff games in recent memory even though we lost. They were clearly the better team and we were inexperienced and took it in 6. Second meeting was trash. Frustration-fest with the Panthers keeping the President’s trophy curse alive. The 2 after that, was more of the same really. One team dominating, in this case, us. So yeah I agree, geographically and division rivals, but the series have been lopsided and only the first one had memorable playoff intensity.

With Toronto, the first series was the same as Tampa’s last 3. We simply dominated and was wash. It’ll remain to be seen on this current one. Yes it’s had its drama but if it ends tomorrow then it’ll suffer the same fate and I’d say the rivalry is brewing but the lopsidedness continues.

Boston. That’s who I would count as the real rivalry these past couple of seasons. We’ve always beaten them going back to our first meeting in 96. For what that second meeting in 23’ meant and going to 7 games in an epic epic game 7 of historic proportion. And the meeting last year, even though we won in 6, was brutal. Didn’t one of the games break the records for most hits ever recorded?

With the current format. That’s what the NHL wants and we continue to see the same teams and if we continue facing them and are successful the fans will hate our team even more. But from a hockey perspective. I think Boston so far has been the more grudge match although yeah depending on what happens in this series Toronto would be second.
Good point, I forgot about Boston, it was easy to forget about it, because with Toronto fans is a constant pounding in the media and they whine so loud, it is hard to ignore.

But, I think Tampa is not really a rivalry, it does not feel like one.

The memes and shit have been fun the last couple days but Carolina just wrapped up their series against the Capitals and they're chilling.

6-1 is a nice margin of victory but it counts towards winning the series just as much as the 2-0 game. Fact of the matter is that the boys still have a job to do tomorrow night in their building. The Leafs, for as pathetic as they've looked at times, are still not out of it. Nylander had a breakaway to start last night's game and who knows how things turnout if he scores to make it 1-0 Leafs right off the bat.

I have all the faith that the guys are going to get it done. I don't think they have any desire to come back to Toronto to play again and will handle things appropriately, but a job still needs to be completed.

The boys won't overlook anyone.

Very well put. 100% this. Get the job done tomorrow. That’s all matters right now.

Hopefully the people in charge have enough sense to know that a healthy Tkachuk is our best chance at success, no matter how long it takes, and hopefully Tkachuk himself agrees.

But that's after this year's playoffs, until then, just pump him full of drugs.

From what I read or heard, the Tkachuk injury is to the point where he can play through the pain, without injuring himself anymore. I love the desire to help his team at all cost.

If the recovery takes that long, we need to just sit him for the season, and LTIR this shit out of this team. Keep Marchand, Benny, and Ekblad.

Really embrace the villain role by using LTIR for the entire regular season lol

Why the f%^k not!!! Use that money to re-sign our players, add a 3rd pairing Dman, and lets go for a 3-peat with a fresh Chucky. That is of course we can beat the Leafs, then Canes, then whoever in the SCFs. Im not looking past tonights game ;)

A desperate take from Bolts fans 10 days ago:

Marner is just another Huberdeau. Perfect player for blind spin passes through the middle of the ice and heading for a change as soon as the opposing player receives the puck. Ofc, it would be very Leafy thing that they'll re-sign Marner to a 14mil per deal.

i feel funny taking us off-topic and talking about hockey here as the board's on a heater here.

just wanted to throw out a couple of things i saw/heard mentioned. i've tried to keep up with the commentary but not sure if others have mentioned them.

first, i felt like i saw a different tactic by our D on dump-ins. we seemed to be gliding toward pucks, shielding the first forechecker in an attempt i assume to allow the rest of the team to get back and provide support, instead of trying to quickly retrieve and make a play, which was killing us earlier in the series,

we seem to be ok with a board battle if necessary and were winning a lot of those scrums. we lost some but even when we did, we were in better position defensively than we were when we were turning the puck over in those situations earlier in the series. when we won, though, we came out quicker and cleaner and that fed our own forecheck, which, ahem, can be effective.

the other thing is that i felt chuckie was much better. hard to say he's 100% but there was def a big jump in his play. he's got more pop in his stride. maurice said post-game that he felt chuckie was "back". we'll see but that's an encouraging and unexpected turn of events. he also talked about keeping verhaeghe away from chuckie when he wasn't at full speed as carter needs guys who can keep up with him to be effective.

i think we have a recipe now. a couple of bounces and a tweak or two and the boys now know what it looks like to play their game against this very good leafs team. it'll be interesting to see what the leafs come back with.
Wow - some actual hockey talk! Really interesting points and it makes me more hopeful that we're rounding into form.

I've been trying to catch up on watching the games the day after but it's been tough so not quite there yet. From what I've seen, it does feel like our roster has really started clicking the last couple of games and we're playing a lot better as a team. I think that's why we're seeing so many of our players getting points/scoring goals up and down the lineup. As Maurice said, it's going to be the best team who wins the Cup and I feel like we're getting there.

It would be interesting to see how we look tonight. I'm pretty confident that we would win a game 7 in Toronto. But not sure if we would win a game 6 at home when we're the clear favourite and Toronto would probably play a lot better and looser.

Status of Maple Leafs’ Knies unclear after Game 6

Matthew Knies‘ status for Game 7 is currently unclear.

The Maple Leafs won Game 6 on Friday night to extend their second-round series with the Florida Panthers.

However, a slight damper on the win came post-game when head coach Craig Berube wasn’t able to say definitively whether Matthew Knies would be able to play Sunday.

“He’s dealing with something here that happened, and we’ve got to look at him and see how he’s feeling tomorrow,” added Berube. “We’ll see how he is.”

After answering that the team doesn’t yet know what Knies’ injury is, Berube said “he wouldn’t know that question right now” when asked if he’ll be available for Game 7.

Knies appeared to be in discomfort throughout Friday’s game after an awkward collision he took with Panthers defenceman Niko Mikkola in the first period.

The 23-year-old never left the bench during play but ended up logging just 13:01 of ice time, well below his average of 20:11 this post-season.

“Just conversations with him. Situational,” said Berube when asked about managing Knies’ minutes, with the forward clearly not at his best.

“I played him in situational play more than anything down the stretch there. If he was good to go or he wasn’t good to go, it was more just me talking to him on the bench and understanding where he was at the time.”

Knies has five goals and two assists over 12 games so far in these playoffs.
