It has been known forever that this core of skilled forwards who fail in the playoffs just dont have it in the playoffs.

BUT, some reason leafs management gave them giant contracts. And AM, Nylander, Rielly got them again.

JT and Marner who knows. They might let them go, or still sign them back if they can agree on a contract. Even if they let them go and use that money for other players, the team is still saddled with AM, Nylander, Rielly who collectively are not good playoff players. So the team is saddled with forever playoff underachievers for another 5 years.

The problem isnt Leafs specific. It's management specific as every sport is similar. They open up the wallet to high scorers not giving a shit if they tank in the playoffs when it counts. All they care about is high scoring regular season stats some reason.

Its a very tight balance when your making a team that needs to win during the regular season to make the playoffs and also win during the playoffs. Its a science that many teams fail to get perfectly but also many times teams are handicapped by the players/coaches they are able to acquire.

I feel for leafs fans cause I know being a Habs fan how damn hard it is to get that perfect regular season/playoff team. There are so many things that can go wrong and the league is so damn tight.

You should be proud though as a leaf fan that your team was able to push the defending SC champs to 7 games.
Not a Leafs fans, but it is indeed admirable that they were able to get to Game 7.

Still, the Canadian teams all seem to want to construct their teams as perimeter-shooting teams with lots of snipers and speedy guys for the odd-man breakouts, but nearly all the recent Cup winners have been very physical teams who largely won by grimy goals down low. The Oilers, for example, did not begin to have success until they started to really fight for those goals down low instead of McDrai trying to snipe it in from outside. My $0.02 anyway.

They gambled on 2 notoriously injury prone goalies. Neither had ever played a full season, or a full playoff series.

IMO this was always the most likely outcome.
Stolarz was healthy most of the season and he finished strong at the end. Just a freak shot off his helmet in game one with a little extra knock by Bennett put him out.
