Isn't calling it a "Choke" the opposite of an excuse? Excuses are intended to soften the blow when a team loses. Calling it a choke is opening the wound and pouring salt in it.

I know some people find the 'choke' tagline fun. Personally, I'd rather enjoy the game for what it is, rather than what it isn't.

I think they are saying that Florida would be choking if they don't win.....thus the Maple Leafs have an excuse if they don't win.....
