Knies is a guy you build around. I like how Marner has been playing all year including playoffs, but under no circumstance should he get a penny more than Rantanen.

Cap space has value. I would like to keep Mitch, his age fits our contending window and obviously he's been a core guy and elevated his game this year.

But it's a cap world. If he wants to be paid more than Rantanen, management has to make a decision.

Realistically I think Knies gets something like 8x8

Cap is supposed to rise, but I just don't see how we can keep him if he wants that kind of money.

I'd personally say they did fine despite losing Tavares for nothing. Their recent downfall had little (or nothing) to do with losing Tavares.

I feel bad for Isles fans, cause if Tampa doesnt LTIR, Isles win the cup in the covid year. Game 7 and 18M over the cap and still barely beat the Islanders.

Just unfortunate, I think they made b2b ECF, can't remember. But they had a solid team. It was the Toews trade that really killed them.

Giving out bad deals also haunts you. Issue is, we have Matthews/Nylander locked up, Knies absolutely needs to be re-signed. Then we have Tavares + Marner. Marner is not worth more than Rantanen, I like Marner I would love to keep him but the money has to make sense.

Also there is a possibility that 97 hits free agency next year. He probably re-signs, he seems like a loyal team guy, but if he does, it would give us a chance to throw big money at him.
