I'm not that surprised they had a letdown performance after Game 7. Going the entire first period with a dump in as their only shot was worse than I would have thought, but at least they didn't get skated out of the building the entire game. You just can't spot a team like Carolina a multi-goal lead and expect to come back. Now they know how Carolina is different than the Rangers (they should have been prepared but shit happens) and can hopefully adjust.

Yeah I wasn't expecting them to look this hung over, but they adjusted a bit as the game went on. I think they will be fine.

I also am not convinced Carolina will continue to have such an easy time finishing.

I thought they would look like shit the first 10 minutes at most, wasn’t expecting them to look terrible for close to 25 minutes.

They were still a couple loose pucks away from making it 3-2 but it’s just how it goes sometimes.

Credit to the canes they played a perfect opening game.

Also the physical presence and the competitiveness.

Both Bratt and Bastian mentioned post game that we didn’t match their intensity in the 1st period. And indeed that was the difference in the game early on. But we are into the series now. I expect a very focused and competitive game 2.
Bratt may as well be talking about himself here.

Bastian is excused because he at least contributed SOMETHING offensively.

Boy that was bad. Canes dominated from the get go. We have to adjust quickly to there being no space and time or this will be a short series. Game two will show whether or not they can make it a series. We're playing a real strong team there that really plays like one.
I don't think it was that bad.

The Canes did get a rested legs jump start in the first round, but I felt like the momentum changed in the second, even before Bastian scored, which obviously helped a lot.

The tripping calls in the beginning were really annoying, since they gave a completely false penalty to the Canes, and even more annoyingly "fixed" with a false call on Haula. The McLeod call also imo involved some re-enacted diving, and both these penalties really took the wind out of Devils.

With a better start this is definitely more than doable. With the faster team, we should be drawing the penalties, not the other way around.

Translation : "It's up to me to stop being a mamby-pamby trying to make fancy shmancy passes and start shooting the f*cking puck for a change" :eviltongu

Still smart word from Jesper. Even if it lowers the high risk chances, just get back to shooting, since the faster the game gets, the better it should be in the long run for Devils.

Stepan looks like he embellished that tripping call big time.

Devils got better after it was 3 to 1 and came close to making it a 3 to 2 game.

It's good to know Schmid will be back in for game 2. I feel bad for Vanaceck but that 4th goal was stoppable. He clearly isn't the answer in goal right now at all.

We can still turn this around but we need to put some pucks on the net. Hopefully Meier will be back and Bratt will stop look for the perfect pass and unleash hell.

Hope the team and the officiating are much better tomorrow.
The team almost definitely will be, but the officiating will continue to suck and the Canes will continue to dive. Just one more thing to overcome and add to this seasons story.

The Canes need to play a damn near perfect game to overcome their lack of depth, so I’m confident the staff can make the appropriate adjustments.

Feels like he struggles to retrieve pucks efficiently. Luke might be better at that than him right now. We might need his speed.
Bratt may as well be talking about himself here.

Bratt picked it up in the 3d but was trying to do too much much by himself by that point - they all were, Hughes was too. But I liked our level of intensity by then: Graves and Hamilton driving to the net, the check Palat put on Staal along the boards. If Hamiltons shot off the crossbar with 12 minutes left goes in, we are in a 1 goal game with a lot of time to play. Friday night it’s going to be intense.

Would love to see Luke in next game. So much of the playoffs is about matchups and Luke brings something that our other defensemen don't, in his speed and transition play, that could be a big boon.

I can get if they didn't want to play him against a heavier Rangers team. But this is a much different series.

Yeah I’m also in the “put Luke in there” camp. I didn’t see a real need in the Rags series, but Carolina plays such a suffocating style. Adding more dynamism to the back end doesn’t seem like a bad idea.

X3. I’d rather have Luke in there making the same mistakes as Graves while being dynamic offensively, than Graves doing his best mud-footed pylon act.

May be a bit too casual but I'm not worried at all, good to see others agree. They simply looked gassed, no excuse for it but it's what it is. Staal's line vs Jack's will be a problem on the road, I don't think they'll get any offensive production from that matchup. I expect Schmid back between the pipes, 2/3 weren't his fault. I've been against it from the beginning but could see Luke make it in here, probably for Graves.

Totally different beast in Carolina. May not have all the "talent" and "names" but they play hard relentless structured hockey. Aggressive forecheck, competent D pinching and breaking out easily, no coasting from that team. May take a game or 2 to get used to the pace but have full confidence the Devils can pull it out.
